Oh joy! Another simple soundcard question

Newbie here, I've read just about evrything on soundcards but still not quite sure on what I need. I'd like to upgrade from my SB128PCI, but not sure what to get. I wont be using my PC for actual tracking, I use an ADAT and Mackie 1604 vlz for that. I just want to use my pc to mixdown to and then burn my cd's. All I really need is a line in and line out. A lot of you guys seem to like the Audiophile24/96.isthat more than what I need? I also read an earlier post where Gidge seemed to recommend the Santa Cruz. Also, the latest MF catalog reviewed EWX24/96 which sounds a lot like the Audiophile. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been reading so much online I feel like I haven't played music in weeks!!!

I have the audiophile 24/96 its fine but if your going to take advantage of the 24bits your computer wants to be up to snuff especially if your running internal effects. Do you use a lot of outboard effects or do you plan on adding in the computer? ...gag
 
hey Gag, All my effects will be outboard gear. I use Alesis midiverbs and an RNC compressor. I would like some good editing software, but I imagine a good soundcard would come with that. If not, I was looking at Goldwave stuff.
 
I think I see where your going here dude.You may want to get a card with a few more analog inputs just in case you want to edit some individual tracks . Lets say your happy with your final mix but you you think maybe a different snare tone so you run a line out to an extra input on your card and eq to your hearts content or whatever. It's just a little more flexible and a used card may be around same price as a new stereo input card.. Cheers Gag
 
thanks for the info. I doubt I'll bee editing any single tracks, hell, i wouldn't know how anyways. i also use a Zoom drum machine. And just FYI, heres what I'm using:
ADAT LX20
MAckie 1604vlz
2 alesis midiverbs
RNC and an alesis 3630
and my PC is a pentium III, 550, with 128 Mb of ram
If I need to edit any single tracks, I just hope to do it before dumping the whole into the PC. Shouldn't be too limiting that way since I only work with 8 tracks and use a drum machine.

well wolfman sounds like its a go. Grab yourself something like the audiophile 24/96 or a good used one with maybe a few extras and your off to the races good luck man ...cheers Gag
 
If your using the ADAT there is really no need for a 24/96 card. You will need 2 inputs (preferably quarter inch). Of course there arnt many choices for cards like that so you might need to get a 24/96 anyway, but all im saying is its not gonna make a big difference.

what would be a good soundcard that sounds as good as the audiophile, but doesn't have the S/PDIF and digital I/O's?
 
I forgot about your adat I'm not to familiar with them are the converters 24bit or 16 ? If your adat is 16 then you can just patch it to your existing card no? Before I got the 24/96 I made a cable to go from my mackie to the cheesy stereo mini jack of my ess card
