Ogg Vorbis question

what is this?
I am using Cubase SL3.0, and it only came with 20 mp3 conversions.   I have noticed that if I export using anything else (other than to the Ogg Vorbis format), I can't put any ID tags on anything that will show the info in a program like windows media player, or in a CD player with CD text capabilities. It's kind of petty, but I like that feature. Here is my question...

I have run out of mp3 exports and I have two options that allow the tagging upon export. Ogg Vorbis and broadcast wave files. I'm using an XP system, but I have nothing that will play the .ogg files, but if I use the broadcast wave export, it seems that none of the information entered will transfer over to anything else. What can I do to get my tags back? Is there perhaps a way to convert the .ogg files to .mp3 files? I don't apparently have any programs that will do that...

I know it's a pretty retarded question, I have been reading through posts relating to the .ogg files with nothing relating to my question coming up. Any help is greatly appreciated!

if you export as .ogg and convert to .mp3 afterwards, you will be losing sound quality as you are converting from one lossy format to another lossy format. Bad idea.

You should just export as a .wav (wave) file, and use another program (perhaps itunes-- it's free) to convert the exported .wav to .mp3. itunes can also give songs the ID tags that will show up in windows media player etc.

I know, I thought about the sound quality issue right after I edited my post for the third time... :o

The only problem with that is that the computer that I use to record is not connected to the net, and the computer that is connected is loaded with viruses for some reason. (And no, it's not because of porn... mostly... :D ) Also, it does not have a CD burner in it so I can take my mp3's with me.

I have some Napster program somewhere on my recording pc so I guess I will have to look and see if that conversion function is available.

Thanks for you help on this one!

I'm not an expert on the subject, but..Transcoding compressed lossy formats is always a bad idea.. If you like the quality of sound you get using the mp3 format, I've generally found that there is little difference between MP3 and OGG. There are a lot of free players that will play the OGG format (winamp, xmms come to mind). A lot of taggers can automatically tag a file using the filename, so if you name the file like "artist name - song name", you can have the tagger import that info into the ID3 tags automatically. less typing. If I *HAD* to use a compressed format to store something that I needed to keep good quality, I'd use something like FLAC (free lossless audio codec).. it's decent, but the files are still very large, and the format isn't supported by a lot of players. If you don't care which format you use (and just need a player), download a player that supports all of the formats you can use to export with ID3 tags, and try the player (and compressed formats) out.

Actually, I don't even bother with Cubase's MP3 conversion. I use AWAVE instead. It uses the LAME codec for doing mp3 conversions and sounds pretty good. Then I use Winamp to add the ID tags.

try CK Rename.. http://musicsucks.com/CKSoft/CKRename/

winamp, or foobar should do the conversion for you. (I like foobar the best personally..highly customizeable, doesnt use many resources, etc)

I like the LAME codec has a nice sound to it, I also like the fraunhofer codec that comes with cool edit, it does add more dither than i like but oh well... my advice would be to get a router even if to just share files between both computers. You can get the .ogg vorbis codec here:

btw i like mp3 320kbps its not the best quality but a good trade-off
