posting this here because I know Harvey is well known in this category. well, i know *who* he is (read his website), and needless to say I am glad he (you) is/are here.

I guess I am just wondering how everyone just seems to know and respect him? Word of mouth I guess...

I looked on the FAQ for the "user rankings" heirarchy or something...I didn't find anything, but..I gather that 100 posts makes you a senior member (maybe?)...what determines the other titles? Harvey is 'Force of Nature'..i have not seen anyone else with that title...just like Gidge is 'Been here, posted that', just wondering if anyone knows the method to this madness?

actually do have a real mic question. As far as cheap(er) preamps go...MidiMan Audio Buddy or ART Tube MP?

I think the titles are automatic, depending on the number of posts you make. I started out here as a "newbie" till I hit 50 posts and became a "junior member", and now I'm whatever it says. (I really don't pay much attention to the number of posts or titles.)

I guess my reputation comes from (partly) being on rec.audio.pro., knowing a lot of people in the industry from the old days, and being in the music industry for about 50 years. I know that Weston Ray, the moderator here, used to sometimes quote me on this forum.

About the only title I really like there days is:

Harvey Gerst
Still Alive

well i don't think there could be a more authoritative answer than that. heh.

I thought "Harvey" was that old movie with Jimmy Stewart!

wes, it's the people like Harvey that help make the internet the great
learning resource it can be. I'm living proof that you can't go by the number
of postings as an indication of recording ability!

P.S. What is your dollar limit for your next mic pre?
Then the wiser members can make more accurate suggestions.

Some people think of Harvey as a Microphone tech
with God like Knowledge.

I on the other hand KNOW his true claim to fame.

His is the inventor of the potato chip.

CRUNCH CRUNCH.

RECORD THAT SOUND ACCURATELY HARVEY!

Love,
Sean

Who is Harvey Gerst?

I was wondering the same thing several months ago when Harvey popped in on the old voice-chat on this BBS (which no longer works) and I began asking him some questions about microphones.

While talking to Harvey, I gained an amazing amount of knowledge about mics and recording in our two hour conversation. This man was patient and helpful and answered all of my questions... and believe me, I asked ALOT of questions!

I was awestruck at his expertise, and humbled by his generosity in helping a novice like myself.
So now, when Harvey posts, I just read and learn.
I have nothing but respect for the man.

Okay, so that means nothing to those of you who don't know him.
Allright, I typed in Harvey's name on google, and here's the results I got just from his name....
http://www.google.com/search?q="harvey+gerst"&hl=en&start=0&sa=N

I hope you have a couple of days to kill while reading all of this... (about a dozen or so pages) and it's just a fraction of what he's accomplished in the recording industry for the past 50 years!
Here's a link that sums up Harvey's experience in his own words... (scroll down through the credits)

I think it is the same Harvey--just as wonderful and magical.

I have insider knowledge that Harvey is the REAL Santa Claus.

Don't look at me like that - it's true!
(you can always tell by the beard...)

:D :D

Well, back in my earliest days in Sanger, Tx, when I was a slightly younger, but not much younger Harvey Gerst, I started using mics as intruments of... wait, DOH!... I posted under my alter ego by accident. Well, I guess the cat is outta the bag. Tubedude and Harvey are the same guy.
Sorry to have tricked you all for so long.
My knowledge is vast.

Am I dead?

Why do I have the feeling I just died and I'm attending my own eulogy? I just checked and I feel fine, at least so far today.

Oh c'mon Harvey... everyone knows Santa is immortal!

;)

I just wanna know what you are looking at in your picture, Harvey. Of many thoughts, you could be looking at the insides of a mic, twiddling knobs on your MCI (is it installed yet?), or just making sure the beer sitting on top of the blonde's head, who is giving a good hummer, doesn't fall off onto the floor, as your hands may be occupied too! :D I can visualize all of the above from the pic :D

Although I'm not sure if I'd like to be refered to as a six foot invisable rabbit that only a tipsy guy that everyone thought was "a few sandwiches shy of a picnic" could see.
Please stick around Harvey.

Actually, that picture was taken last Xmas, by a friend who didn't know a thing about cameras, let alone using a digital camera. When I saw it, it kinda intrigued me, since the lighting was kinda cool, and it actually made me look thoughtful and possibly even slightly intelligent.

The usual picture (of me sitting behind the console) makes me look like just another 65 year old recording dork (which is exactly what I am).

After 50 years in the music business, and still alive, I should probably get some kind of award for simply outliving most of my peers. By confining my efforts to do damage in only one field of endeavor - music, I have gained some fame, but it's only because I happened to be the only person around at the time.

yeah.....the beenie with the prop on the top [worn by most 65 yr old dorks :D] was successfully edited out of the pic:eek:

keep up the good work, Harvey. You're an asset to all us 50 yr olds:p

I NEVER wear the beanie (with the prop on it) in the control room - when the the prop moves. it creates a phasing effect that drives me crazy.

Wes,

The labels reflect the humor and wisdom of our generous host, David Fiedler (aka Dragon2), who makes this great bulletin board possible. It's good if you can send a couple of dollars his way once in awhile.

I for one should not be called a "senior member," no matter how many times I've posted. I'm a complete newbie who is grateful for the kind patience of those who regularly share their experience here. This site has accelerated my learning more than any other single source of information.

Harvey is one of a handful of highly experienced people who generously share their knowledge and explain the technicalities of recording in ways that others can understand.

The web community doesn't get any better than this.

Best wishes,

Mark H.

The REAL Harvey

I have made another Harvey sighting!

Any of you seen Lord of the Rings yet? If so, you'll know in the depth of your soul that Harvey is....

Gandalf!

That wise, crafty and kind wizard that guides Middle Earth in a final battle against Sauron, the dark lord of Mordor, effortlessly dispensing deep wisdom along the way. He helps hapless Hobbits overcome evil....

Or is it hapless homerecers overcome feedback?
