Off tempo - why?

Hi All,

Im new to recording. Bumped into this problem. Can someone explain why this is happening and what can i do about it.

In recording:
I play along a drum track saved in my mp3 player through headphones.
Record my guitar with Cool Edit in editing view.
Save as WAV.

As i try to mix:
I import the exact mp3 drum file in track 1.
Then, import the recorded guitar in track 2.
As i try to align both accordingly, the tempo doesnt seem to match.
The drums play faster than the guitar.
 Why? I played and recorded along the same drum file so it should be in sync.

Why is this happening? It's no use recording all the other guitar tracks if i dont get this sorted out first.

Anybody?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

:)

From within your wav editor look at your audio attributes or the document properties of each track to see the sample rates.

are you recording though an onboard soundcard or creative? It could be clock jitter. Hopefully it's mixed sampling rate though. no idea ho to check it in CE

The drum file is mp3, 44100Hz, 16-bit, Stereo
Length: 4:00.822
10,620,288 samples

The guitar part is wav, 44100Hz, 16-bit, Stereo
Length: 0:40.590
1,790,019 samples

Note that both sound clips are not the same in length.
The drum track is the whole song.
The guitar part is just the intro and the 1st verse of the songs.

More info:
Surprisingly, when i tried to import the guitar track in fruity loops (where I created the drums track) its in sync!

Im thinking Cool Edit must be playing with the tempos of both tracks when I import it in. Not sure though.
