which is best?

I've been reading about KRK rp6/rp8, m-audio bx5a/bx8a and the Mackie Mr8/mr5

I'm assuming active is what I want not passive is this correct?

are you talking about for a pair, or individually?

Pair-wise, easily the RP-6.

You wouldn't.

Monitors are generally ordered individually, so I have to make sure you are talking about either individual monitors or a pair of them.

Yo SF&U:

Two monitors, for sure, as noted. As long as you have a nice pffat budget, You might as well get a pair of Adam A7. They are the low-end for Adam.

You will need 999.00 pezzutos as the price is locked into that price no matter where you go. I have gone through several pairs of monitors and the Adam7 monitors are very nice.

Oh, one can spend more; however, sometimes "more" isn't always necessary.

For less money, you can look at the KRKs which do well too. I had a pair and sold them in a day when I mentioned I was going to upgrade.

Some passive speakers can be "very expensive." They may be very good. I'm not sure as I've not used a top-end set of passives. Actives are usually a step up.

Cheers,
Green Hornet

actually...if you will notice....the cheaper monitors are generally priced per pair....not always ofcourse, but in general...

so in order to answer the question of the OP, we would need to know if you are talking about monitors that are seperately 300 to 500 for a total of up to $1000 or do you mean that you have up to $500 to spend on the pair?

I think you are talking about pairs. I highly recommend the KRK RP8. Really great sound reproduction. The low-end is pretty accurate for the price (about $250 a piece). The RP6's are good as well but the low (below 100hz) is kind of light in the boots (you may end up with some mud in the mix and not hear it reproduced on the monitors.)

To be honest, I preferred the RP6 over the RP8. The RP8's sounded muddy to me.

well I don't want to buy monitors again for a long time and I'm not ever going to spend $10,000 on them so I think $500 for the two would be about what I would want to spend.

what price range would, the cheapest monitors that the professionals use, be in?

I'm debating whether it would be worth it to go slightly higher

I think the Behringer Truth speakers were pretty good, compared to my KRK V8s.

most folks would tell you at least $800-1000 for something like adam A7's or yamaha NS10/HSM80...but to tell the truth, i know a guy who's doing some major label metal albums on the 8" behringer truths

i've also been looking in this price range for monitors and was set on getting the KRK RP6's, does anyone have any opinions on the Adam A5's or are they generally lacking compared to the A7's?

cheers

KRK monitors are awesome, I love mine :)

Check out the following brand as well - Tapco <-- they are supposed to be good for their price.

I might settle and get the KRK RP6's then, since i've only really heard good things about them!

They are great monitors. Once you get a set of KRK's you'll notice why KRK owners say great things about them. Go for the 6's or 8's if you can afford to. :)

I have the M-Audio BX8a's.

Major improvement over the last 2 monitors I owned. (Roland DS-50's and Edirol Monitor's).

Anyway, I'm very happy with the M-Audio BX8a's for the $500 I spent on them. Stereo imaging is excellent, and my mixes come out pretty true, in that.... the song's still sound great by the time I've burnt them to CD and taken them to the car, or a boom box, etc.

I unfortunately have very little experience with KRK's. (I've sat behind the 8's for 20 minutes, but not long enough to form an opinion).

so the rp6's are $200 a piece and the rp8's are $250 a piece but the 6's are better? sounds funny

is the only difference the diameter of the speaker?

Yes, that's where the cost come in. The RP5, 6, and 8 are all the same 'quality' in terms of build, but the cost differences is in the size. Because of the differences in speaker size, they will sound different.

In most cases, the larger woofer sizes sound better (8 seems to be a pretty good point) for better bass reproduction, but in the RP case, the 8's were just a bit too muddy, the 6's were more clear (though the 8's were still better than the 5's).

hows your room sound? if yo have no room treatment id say smaller speakers and a close listening distance pair of mackie mr5s or Yamaha MSP5S
