E Minor Thing for Three

Improvisation for two nylon string guitars and fuzzy electric.

I play a bit of scales/arpeggios as part of my practicing, a different key each day, then usually finish with a few minutes of multitracked improvising in that key. That's what this is. There's an electric fan in the distance, sorry... hadn't planned on saving this.

Weird Tim, I saw this thread show up earlier. Then hit refresh like one minute later and it already had like 95 views.

Anyway, this is a very engaging piece of music. There's some real cool parts where it just feels like there's so much going on. Especially when the distant sounding electric gets going, it just kind of surrounds the listener with different parts.
I'd low cut just the part with the thump at 1:41, I kind of hear the fan in there, but it's consistant, the thump is a little distracting.
It doesn't sound like you'd lose too much acoustic sound by high cutting the hiss with EQ, but maybe I'm wrong.
I don't know if you have something for editing the final file, if not I'd recommend Goldwave, the bandwidth, lowpass/highpass filters it has would help remove some noise from certain sections of the final mix. It's free at www.goldwave.com
As always very nice playing, enjoyed the feel and sort of odd mood to this very much :)

Timothy,
This reminds me of the 1 minute improvisation on the Cohen Live album recorded in '69 or there abouts. Maybe the same key - maybe the classical string sound.
The electric fits really well - it sounds like a fairly early King Crimson prelude.
Mate, that an exercise improv comes of this together is a wonderful thing.
I think the fan just adds some real worldness to the otherworldniness of the piece. Kind of like it was recorded by a trio in an equatorial clime.

Very cool man...I'd like he electric to be a bit louder at the start. I think it adds great tension to the piece. As always, very good playing, Tim. Nice sounds, and the fan doesn't seem to detract from this one bit. I like it much....

Snake - I'll listen for the thump - had missed that. Don't know what happened with the 95 initial views all at once. I had noticed that too. Odd. Well it's an odd piece. :) Thanks S.D.

Ray - appreciate the comparisons to those bands. The equatorial thing... it was hot that day. :D Just off the cuff, no mic positioning or file editing.... just used a room mic I keep high in the corner of my studio.

EDIT: Dogman, you must have posted right when I did. Thanks for the listen. I'll look at the level of the electric at its entrance as you suggested.

Hi Tim. I have been listening to "Oddity in E minor" for quite a while now. I also downloaded it.

I like this piece. It is very inspiring of one's imagination.

At first I thought I would love to hear the electric guitar brought up with just a tad more volume....but because too much volume would kill the subtleness of it's affect, I think I would keep the volume as is. It is a tease to ones listening senses.

Once you become inter-weaved in the music, the fan just fades into the music.

I would hope that all who hear, will experience the fullness of this audio-visual journey you are taking them on.

The acoustic.....a guide of the journey....steady and sure in it's direction to a place far away...a place of amazing sunsets and magnificent sunrises...the sea a watering place of dreams......trees with long wispy leaves, weeping downward toward the earth and arching back upwards the sky, as the breeze stirs them in a wind dance.

The electric....the emotion of the journey....Lips tasting of the sweetness of wine....eyes closed, drinking in the seductivness of sounds, the lazy inhalation of jasmine mingled with the salt air....all is arousing the senses, the soul, the heart, to a heightened pleasure of being.

Oooooo...I will stop here. :D I love this Tim! There is so much more I can decribe, but won't!!!! ;)

Good one True - Tim's music really does lend itself to vibrant imagery and emotions and your review expresses those things really well. :) :) :) :)

I'm going to add that the playing is fabulous as always - really nice licks and great flow.

That electric really "jazzes" things up too. Getting lots of Santana vibe off that.

The recording is really good too and the fan doesn't distract - almost like that familiar tape hiss ;)

:) :) :D :D

Tim,

Can't hear the fan.

Man, great acoustic playing. As always. The runs and the scales sound really cool.

The subtle electric just keeps you listening to sort out the melody from the louder stuff. Keeps you hooked. Is that electric mic'd or DI'd?

Man, if this is just improv for you I'd like to see what you'd do with a little planned composition. My improvs tends to go nice for 5 seconds and then I go off key. :)

Anyhoo, really really nice playing man. :)

True – what a great description… Thanks!

Ido1957 – thanks for the listen buddy.

Bigbubba – The elec was mic’d with a 57. I appreciate the comments. Can’t hear the fan? Well here it is…

Tim...cool pics. It's always fun to see what people have for rooms, and equipement. My stuff is very minimal, and some setups are very elaborate. Just fun to compare...

Very cool tone/texture to the acoustic/nylon string guitar. The electric contrast very well with the theme that the classical lays down.I really like this...nice job!

You always seem to find that impossible to grasp combination of precision and soul in your playing... Such a rare treat... very cool, sort of neurotic piece... thoroughly enjoyed it!!!

 Almost did'nt post here on this one Tim. But I figured you wanted to get some constructive criticism on the piece. And though I may get flamed for it by some members, here it goes.

Being that it's a improv, it's not bad. The playing is great as always, but it just seemed a little to busy for the feel of the piece. Some times to many guitars spoil the emotion and muddy the music in my opinion. Having just the two acoustics, or just one acoustic and one electric would have sufficed I think.

Hell, I could have even seen one acoustic fade out and have the electric come in and then vice a versa. But by the good responses, I may be off base on my criticism. If so, just ignore this post. :D

Every opinion matters. I always want to hear criticism. Otherwise we'll all just play it to our grammas who'll always love it. :)

Tim, I know it's your thread. Just wanted to voice support for opinions.

:)

Could be I can't hear the fan because I got mine goin...lol. It is summer time and all of that. I enjoyed this, it's a good morning peice of music. :)

This piece would not have been the piece it is, without the imaginative use of the instruments....with their tones, volumes, emotions of boldness, emotions of subtleness..... and their placements in the song.

That however is my humble opinion....which I so arrogantly think is right on with this one. :D

I cannot see anyone flaming anyone for an opinion, although I know it happens. ;)

Dogman – thanks. I always like seeing pics of everybody’s setups so I tossed some it too.

Variaxman – glad you like the texture of the combination. I wasn’t sure at first it was workable but I’m getting to like the elec and nylon combination. :)

Llarion – wow, I think I’ll use that first stentence as a quote in my promo stuff. Thanks lots. Neurotic huh? wHAt dO yOu MEAn, nEUroTIc!!!!!!!!!11111!!11!

Cmhansen – Many thanks Chris for the ideas… Nobody’s going to flame you in MY thread I hope. I think the “too busy” idea is accurate. I approach improvising like this as a game-like exercise… one take of each part – in a kind of “stream of consciousness” frame of mind, then mix minimally keeping a live feel. This time I decided to do one with no editing as part of the "game", so there's some fighting for space going on I think but I left it in to keep it "live". Comments like this are helpful to me in recognizing things to improve in my improvising. :)

Bigbubba – I second that.

RichHead – thanks for the listen.

True – you always seem to be very sensitive to the emotional content of music. Thanks.

Dolphin Babe – Thanks D babe. The fan motor is few cents below Bb, so the tune is actually a polytonal improvisation. :D
