I looked at it and chose the M-Audio Octane instead. I liked the features better (especially the M-S encoder), and thought the preamps sounded more neutral.
It has the prefix "Octo" which either means it has 8 channels (Good!) or it's an octopus in disguise (Bad!). If it's an octopus you're gonna be screwed.
no i have no tried focusrite, I may not need exactly 8 pre but if i bought like three M-audio tampa(i was thinking of buying the tampa at first) that it is about the same price of a 8 channel pre, (the mic i would probaly use on the pre amp is both snare mics the two overhead mics and the guitar mics (three)
I'm pretty sure that the Octopre has the same preamps as the rest of the Focusrite Platinum series (Trakmaster/Voicemaster etc). Try a forum search on these - it might help you out.
I use a Trakmaster & I'm happy with it but I can only compare it to my other pres which are the built in ones on my Korg D16 & they are not very good.
Other than that, I believe that the Octopre has a combined compressor/peak limiter on each channel - I'm sure this would be a desirable feature for recording drums.
As stated before, are you sure that you want 6-8 channels of the exact same pres? You'd be better off getting several different ones so you have options.
