OC 703 Above Drum Kit

Hello all, It sure has been a while. I'm in pursuit, hot pursuit of building/creating some absortion panels. And even after searchin' the board for all she's worth I couldn't find the answers to some of my questions. So I'll cut to the chase and see if any of you acoustic-heads could answer my amatuer questions.

1. What is better 2" thickness or 4" thickness?
2. Where is the best/cheapest place to buy the insulation? (I found six 2"x48"x24" sheets "on sale" at readyacoustics.com for $69.99. Is that good/enough?)
3. How high above the kit should I hang these?

I guess thats all for now, but I know I will think of more.

Typically the thicker the better as far as absorption goes. This also will depend on the sound of your overall room, space (height limitations) etc.. 2" maybe enough - that's fairly standard from what I have come across.

That seems reasonable - I had two cases (12 sheets) shipped for $130'ish

"3. How high above the kit should I hang these?"
"Typically" it should be the thickness of the 703 from the ceiling. E.g. 2" 703 should be 2" from the ceiling, wall etc..

Cool thanks for all the info. Yeah my room is garbage, ceilings are only about 9"

I was also reading alot more and noticed almost everyone frames thier foam. Is there any reason for this besides making it look nice, or could I just wrap the fiberglass in burlap and throw it above my drum kit?

For a ceiling application you can certainly just rap the 703 in fabric and hang it from the ceiling (use fender washers and an eye bolt for example). I believe there are "hanging kits" available specifically for this via some of the acoustic companies.

Frames make it much easier to wrap the panel with fabric and hang it.

9'???? I have 7'1.5" in my studio!

I can't even hang my 2" 703 2" below the ceiling!

I do think that putting it right on the ceiling will be ok in this application since taking the upper frequencies out should be helpful in eliminating the sense of a low ceiling in the recording. But you have room to drop it down to further reduce the low mids rolling around your space.

A 9' ceiling is ok!

Mine is 8,5 , with 3 clouds, the thinner is 4" (above "instruments/vox",for recording)
Above mix position, 2 more, and thicker (6" and 10").
Clouds are great, cleaning the "stage" and improving peaks and nulls.
I use w/ frame (easier to fix on ceiling, IMO).

Well, I guess I was way off. I took a guess, but when I actually measured they are 7.5.

I guess I will be absorbing with the 2" foam, and making frames. It sounds like treating a room yeilds some good results if done correctly. I'm well pleased with all my gear/equipment so there really isn't much else to buy. This looks like a good investment. And not as costly as some folks make it out to be.

6 sheets foam: $80-90 shipped
lumber: $30
Burlap: unpriced (so far)
