I am looking for some really good experimental music, for listening pleasure as well as songwriting inspiration. Can anyone recommend something good to help color up my dull life?

thats just the kinda "experimental" stuff i get into, but experimental is a broad term... these are all musician type guys and not electronic artists (who are musicians aswell) and probably with the exeption of tom waits a little on your heavier/sparatic side of the experimental spectrum...

Try some Miranda July flipped out spoken word. 10,000 seconds a mile is a good one. I'll second the waits even though i prefer his old stuff, and thats not all that experimental. Fantomas is also a good choice. I just went ans saw ween last night. They're old stuff is pretty experimental. Sigur Ros freakin phenomenal, my personal favorite lately. Dirty three sonic youth etc...

Yeah i know. i just heard about them (sigh, living in the boondocks its slow to hear of some of these guys) about a month ago. I haven't gotten that one yet. I've got () and an ep and a few live recordings i got off of sigur-ros.uk.com i think thats the address i'll check after i post. But yeah best new thing in awhile. Have you heard vespertine by bjork? You'd probably like that too if you like them.

though they were probly not really experimental, especially in europe, but I have noticed that alot of bands have ripped off their sound, including (I think) sigur ros, with there vocals at least. If that is the singer I think it is, (he does not sing words, but sounds?) If so, then that band definately ripped off Durutti Column.
That is not to say they are not still good though.

Sigur ros kind of made up they're own language from what i know. They call it hopelandic.. ok yeah that's really cheesy. But apparently they sing in some english some icelandic and yes a healthy dose of just plain gibberish.
Also guys if you like spoken word try slim moon, witchie pooh (sp?), Lydia Lunch
i also just got this CD called Funky Donkey by... luther thomas or maybe it's thomas luther it's a little confusing with a name comprised of two viable first names. Anyway it's him and B.A.G. if you like improv jazz this cd kicks complete ass. It's only got like three tracks but it's a full 70 minute cd.

Mwng by Super Furry Animals is all sung in Welsh and is very bizarre but accessible and brilliant. Hard to find but worth it. Their latest, Rings Around the World is a good intro to the band.

I don't know what kind of music you're looking for but I'd definitely recommend GYBE as an experimentalist band (though they're not really obscure anymore). I haven't heard much Sigur Ros, but I'm kind of turned off by the whole idea of Hopelandic — how cheesy and pretentious can you get? I also haven't heard any Mogwai, but I hear they're quite good if you like GYBE, and I might check them out soon. If you're looking for something with both experimentalism and a bit of mainstream appeal, I live off of artists like Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad (for a more metal flavor), the Gathering (self-dubbed "trip-rock" for their combination of gothic metal, pop w/ female vocals and trip hop) and sometimes, just sometimes, Opeth...especially their latest album, Damnation.

Godspeed (GYBE) is awesome but I would definitely check out Sigur Ros. Forget the Hopelandish stuff as the lyrics are not the issue here. If you like Godspeed you may like them. I've heard some Modwai and its a bit heavy for my taste. But if you like metal then check them out. To me the whole genre sounds pissed off for no reason.
I wouldn't call Bright Eyes experimental but it is different and their last album is great. Also Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was the best album of 2002 and, while not really out there, is still not run of the mill.
I would also go back to groups like Can (Tago Mago).
If you really want to change you brain chemistry, Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart is still unrivaled.
