I don't do to much work on electric hardware. I have a guy I always recommend to people who come to me for that. I do a fair bit of installing stuff on my own instruments and also general workshop soldering. So...
My soldering irons are all "Weller". I have three in various sizes and wattage. I don't think Maplin carry them but they are worth the extra in terms of reliability and the way they feel. You might also want to consider getting a solder sucker if you are going to be doing any repair or replacement soldering also very handy if you are doing any repairs on pcb's etc.
I really don't know what Maplin carry but they have a parts guy at most Maplins ask him.
