I'm 17 and have a limited ammount of cashflow. I don't have a huge selection of different mics and pres and amps and stuff, and always got a little annoyed when people discussed in detail different tones and colors and sounds of different mics and pres and guitar amps and guitars and stuff, since I had such a small group of equipment. I had nothing to compare my equipment to. My guitar amp that I've used for 2 years now (since I started) is a cheap 15w silvertone starter kit amp that proabibly costs 10 dollars to make. I have always thought "there can't be THAT big of differences between amps, etc"....

But my Original Fender Twin Reverb Silverfaced amp with celestians came in the mail today.....

WOW. I truly understand what people are talking about better when people talk about different sounds and tones different amps and mics and what-have-it produce. The difference is increadible, simply increadible. When I had nothing to compare my small starter kit to, I thought of course that it sounded fine. But now it sounds harsh and buzzy, like a flaming leamer screaming in pain. The clean on the Fender Twin is simply increadible, especially with the bright button on. The reverb is spectacular and this thing is LOUD. I can't crank it past 3 or 4 (yes, my silverface has master volume! :) ) withought it blowing my ears off. I played it with my rhodes too, I had no idea the rhodes could produce such a great sound!

I think the vibrato is a little weird though.....And does this thing even have distortion? If I crank the channels volume and then turn up the master it gets distorted, but I havent messed with the master much since it's so loud!

Some of the pots are really scratchy too, perhaps some good old deoxidizing contact cleaner will do the job.

Anyways, just thought I'd express my amazement and joy......

Heh, it's always fun when people finally "hear the light" so to speak! Just be careful; If you don't keep it in check, you'll find yourself buying everything under the sun to see what kinds of crazy sounds you can make :D
Fender Twins are pretty awesome amps, so wise move on your part. If you can clean it yourself, go for it, if not, take it to a shop and get the bugger fixed up.

that's a hell of a leap you made there. congrats. for me, a twin sounds awesome with the master all the way up but it depends on which speakers are in your amp. i've heard extremely loud twins and others that were loud but not overbearing. the speakers play a huge role in an amps sound.

Be careful poking around in amp chassis. There are some voltages in caps that can knock you on your ass.

Yeah, the Fender Twin is THE clean tone tube amp.

If you know a good amp tech it's worth the $$$ to have it checked out.

Ebay for pre and power tubes. Tons out there and way cheaper than anything you can probably find locally.

I bought a Peavey classic chorus 212 when I was 14. Great clean sound for a transitor amp, good controls... and what I thought was a passable distorted channel. I couldn't afford better and this was the days before the internet so it was the best option I had.

A year or two later the distortion sucked. It always did, but I was just playing with people who had more experience dialing in "their sound" and I couldn't even get close with the Peavey. So I bought pedals and some of the early multieffects boards. That worked for a while.

But not forever. After a long foray into acoustic music I returned to a good distorted Les Paul only to find that the distortion on the Peavey still sucked. So I bought a Marshall AVT50. Much, much better.... but still a bit to fizzy and sloppy for my taste. Good enough to use, but still not what I was looking for.

So now I have a Fulltone OCD and all I need is an amp with a good clean channel... such as the now ancient but still going Peavey 212. Suh-wheet! The pedal cost me almost half as much as the amp did back in the day, but I now have a sound I'm happy with.

So I'm a believer too- good stuff is worth the cash you pay for it.

The same is true of the instruments themselves. I played an Ibanez sumthin' 5 string bass for about 12 years. I liked it, it worked... but then I scored a Tobias Toby Pro 5 string off craigslist...

NO comparison. I just gave the Ibanez to a student of mine who is considering playing bass just to nudge him over into DOING it.

I just can't buy crap anymore. Not worth it. Lord knows I've spent enough money to learn that lesson the hard way, but it really is true: buy cheap, buy twice. Not that you have to break the bank with every purchase, but I find its generally better to have a few great things (like the OCD) than a bunch of so-so things.

Enjoy your new wisdom and your good sound!!
Chris

Wait til you hear it with a couple of Weber Michigans or Blue Dogs in it!! :D

Awesome collection.

I didn't need long to find out which one you use for gigging....

Congrats on making a step in the right direction. I remember my first gear upgrade and how extatic I was at the better sound I was able to get.

I know exactly how you feel man, I almost died when I made a jump from my 15w crate practice amp to my JCM800.

Now i'm just waiting until I have enough to get a cab with celestion vint. 30's in them.

I'll never forget going from my Carlsbro GLX80 (not a bad tranny amp) to my Fender CVR.

I'll also never forget getting the CVR fitted with new valves!
Oh yes :D

Fender twin, one of my favorite live amps. Played one for years until I got older and just didn't want to lug around the weight of those 2-12s. I switched to a Vibrolux, same thing, 2-10s instead. Much easier for on the go but not quite as loud.

Enjoy your new sound.

Texsunburst59, great collection. I would love to have that Princeton, great studio amp.

I'm certainly not dissing your recent purchase...a Fender Twin is always a good thing to have. I love my Silverface '74.

However, they didn't originally come with Celestions.

I've heard varying opinions on Celestions in Twins. If yours sounds good, then don't change it. But, if you want to get some different sounds, switching speakers is a relatively inexpensive way to get a lot out of your amp.

best Twin sound I ever had was with 2xJBL drivers instead of the fenders

Check to see if the master vol is push/pull.If it is,pulling it will put you at
1/2 power and allow you to get some dist at lower vols.
Congrats and welcome to the tube club.
