Pinky

and The Brain...

This took a real long time. Probably the hardest mix I've ever done. At one point there are 7 guitars playing at once. The composition is something I've been toying with for the last 2 months and eventually recorded a base track for my friend lew to add some lead stuff over, and it progressed from there. It goes from pop to metal funk back to blues based rock and ends as metal. Definitely a groove piece that intentionally throws off its own groove.

Most of all this was a ton of fun, both to produce and to play along to countless times trying to get a bassline to fit or acoustic to punch through...

Turn it up, and keep it there. ;)

Very funky at the start. I like the groove. Only real suggestion I have is, I'd like to hear a bit more drums. More depth. They seem a bit subdued here. Just a little bass boost for the kick sound maybe. The guitar parts are really cool.

The guitars sound alright, maybe a bit too wet for my tastes (reverb)...But I can swear there's no bass drum in there. Not too much bass either. Something in the eq-ing is a little harsh, maybe the high end? Not sure..Are the guitars recorded direct? Nice riffs though.

Thanks for the feedback :). I'll look into why the kick drum gets washed out. May just be a simple EQ'ing... probably trim the highs a tad too.

Finally...a geetar jam! I love this!!! You have an awesome song in the making here. I am impressed by your experimental prowness. I think you are holding back on your passion though. All through this, you get right to the edge, then back off. You would take me to a point of......I am not trying to be sexual here, but it is the only description I can give.....It is like getting to the edge of a climax, then backing off over and over, climbing to the finale'.
For some reason you never take it that far.

Don't misunderstand, I am not bashing your composition. This IS a kick ass piece, but it needs some down right raw animal passion towards the end to set my hair standing up and goosebumps and..... :D

I agree with Rami on the drums. The kick bass is non-existant. And yeah, if it is a guitar jam, the Bass needs equal honor.

Your very talented. :)

True, unless you have a crew-cut, I'm scared to ask where you have hair that would be standing up. :p :D

:D Leave it to you Rami to interrogate my post. And to make sense!!! :D

Typing while listening. I like the guitar layering. Great playing man, im liking this alot. Overall the mix seems a tad bit bright but I don't think thats really a bad thing. At about 2 minutes, im totally into this. Love that acoustic in the background. Also dig 3:08 on alot where it kicks up a bit. I agree with some of the mix things said previously but i think this is pretty good man, really enjoyed it. I think I still listen to a tune by you actually called "oblivion" not sure you ever got someone to sing on that,, id like to hear that.

Take care man

Playing is definitely good. Chord progression is very nice. It sets that mood of constantly being on the edge. Very smooth delivery on the rhythm guitars. :)

I would say bring the snare up a lot. Make it louder, like "Scorpions" loud. Kick should be made louder and clearer. Hats are ok just where they are but I personally like to hear more.

I like the playing a lot. Just the mixing needs a little more tweaking as far as my personal opinion is concerned. The drums made louder would help the head-banging also. :)

Keep doing what you're doing here. :D

Off Topic (Sorry :)):
RAMI - you haven't posted a new tune this week. Don't tell me the private-message-critic got to you. :p. Do you need latest recording of Bush to help you get inspired? :)

HAHA! I didn't know if anyone would notice...Hey, I was on a roll there, it couldn't last forever...Having said that, I have one going up tomorrow or Friday at the latest...Just have to re-do a few vocal lines and mix it. It's been a really busy week. I haven't had as much time to record. It's certainly got nothing to do with some loser who left 25 other people the same message he left me...He's the loser, I feel sorry for him, it certainly wouldn't stop me from putting up music. Thanx for asking bro. :)

Hehe, just thought you had slowed down or pulled back from around here. Granted we can't all visit the forum everyday but thought I'd see what's going on. :)

Outstanding chord progression at the beginning. Truthfully, I like this song better with the halftime feel like the beginning. Nice chords throughout. Thanks.

OMG... well, thanks first of all for the compliements. Sometimes an encouraging word is important as the criticism (knowing what I'm doing right is probably more important than fixing a few flaws).

I actually already did a remix earlier this evening and uploaded it a few hours ago. Unsure which version some of you heard, assume it was the old one. I took the initial feedback and ran with it, trimming a lot of the crispness and boosting the kick drum in the mix (which also raised the snare a tad). In the process I cleaned up the toms, which got drowned in the mix and were too bassy.

As for composition. I'm not out to get you off, but I am all about the emotional response. Music should trigger something in us, as players and listeners. Instrumental pieces can be just as thunderous as a good top 40 hit. While I'm a big fan of prog rock, I try not to delve into getting overly technical in my work. Bands like Rush tend to throw in random time changes and add/drop beats for sheer sake of doing it. I limit that sort of one-upmanship. We're not here to compare musical resumes or to brag about our Julliard schooling. It's in that spirit I try to keep stuff as straight forward as possible.

With all that being said, I'm a self taught player with a good sense of composition. It's in the technical area I struggle the most. Typically I play a part 5-10 times before hitting record. It's been a long time since I played in smoke filled rooms with jazz musicians, doing whatever felt right. Now it's about tailoring and feeding that feeling.

Oh, and caffeine helps a lot too. :D

Your posts were/are very entertaining and I appreciate the time you took to make them. :)

Not to worry I deleted my comments...I was having trouble understanding about a guitar part not putting forth enough passion. That deal about a guitar part getting right to the edge then backing off makes me want to hear your explanation as to what else needed to be there to make it acceptable to you. Really can it be discribed?
This is a mixing clinic, which clearly is here for constuctive critisim and encouragement. If I have offended anyone I apologize. What? Do I just say syrupy sweet shit? I thought I was being encouraging at the same time I was just giving my opinion. That is what we all want in here? I said it kicked ass. :)

Yup, that was several months ago. It was a similar idea that never really took off. Another good composition that I just couldn't develop. If you're volunteering to add vocals I could accomodate any mix of the song you want ;).

True-ert, I took no offense to anything you posted. It's actually kinda funny to read that sort of metaphor, but it isn't that far from the truth. Music is a kind of spiritual orgasm, as I explained to some extent in my last post...

Last bump, just to see if the remixed version is better... (same link as the first post, I just replaced the original mp3 file with the remixed one)
