Another board I've been visiting is having a discussion about what is the difference in "real" CDs and CDRs. No one can really come to any agreement on it even the people who sound like they know a lot. Some even say that "real" CDs are not burned? I thought someone on here maybe could shed some light on this subject.

True, real CDs are not burned but are pressed much like a vinyl LP is pressed. CD-Rs are burned with a CD burner.

I hope I don't sound too dumb asking this but what exactly is a vinyl LP? I've seen them on different websites but never had any clue about what they were.

:( You're making me feel old, here. It's a record, you know the 12", black plastic disc with grooves in it, that goes on a record player.

Fuhh...I guess the day they told us about has finally come.:(

We're not really old, the world is young.

Oh man. I feel old too. I remember buying 45s of my favorite songs.

There's a Japanese firm working on a firewire interface. :D

Also, trivia tip of the day for those who didn't know - On a CD-ROM (audio or otherwise) the "pits & valleys" are molded into the plastic. The aluminum is used strictly as a reflective surface.

Let me guess at a few things here.

You've never used a rotary phone.

You've never known a TV without a remote.

You've never seen any calculators with red LED's for display.

You've never heard of UHF.

You've never heard the phrase "this ends our broadcast day...doooooooooooooooooo"

Dare I ask if you've ever seen a 5 1/4" floppy disk?

Yep, I'm feeling old myself, now.

I remember when the Empire State Building was the tallest in the world.
:(

How about computer punch cards ?

8 tracks was a cartridge tape, not 8 channels to record onto

No one had hair longer than The Beatles

TV's were once available only in Black and White

Nope, haven't heard of any of those. Oh well. The world stops turning (and advancing) for no one. :D

If anybody does know what the difference between a "pressed" and "burned" CD I'd also be curious to hear the answer. Is there really a difference in sound quality or durability?

Also, do they make CDRs blue just so that they can be differentiated from pressed CDs or is that their natural color?

How about mono LPs for $1.00 less than Stereo? ($2.50 vs. $3.50)

...waiting for the radio to warm up before sound would come out?

...or grocery stores and deparment stores closed on Sundays?

...Going to the bank for cash, during the work day, cause they had "banker's hours?"

No body mentioned ugh, 78's or  Victrolia's!!!!

What about Tom Terrific and his dog Manford Mann!

Howdey Duty & Bufflo Bob.........

Man those were the days......

109 octane for $.13 a gallon......

LPs and the good old days.

I remember all those things!

- Slide rule in physics class.

- 8MM home movies

- Rotary telephone (and here is a good one) on a party line.

- Rabbit ears.

- A pocket transistor radio was pretty cool.

- LPs were cool because they were "Long Playing". More time for making out without changing the record. At least in theory. :-)

- Hi-Fi stores (when stereos were "Hi-Fidelity Record Players with Sterophonic Sound") .

- A crazy thing called a Moog Synthisizer (a handful of whacky classical composers messed around with those, probably on dope).

- Paying a small fortune to do a demo tape because home recording was not financially or technically practical for most musicians.

- No method of distributing or sharing your music (such as the web).

- Heavy steel automobiles with the steering column that goes through your chest in a wreck.

- Seatbelts an option.

- Electroshock therapy.

- No one ate "wierdo food" like grains and vegetables. We all ate "healthy food" like a lot of red meat, milk, bread made with bleached white flower.

- We could stay warmer in the winter thanks to asbestos insulation.

- Everyone smoked.

- US and USSR poised to end all life on planet Earth in about 45 minutes.

- Air travel was too expensive for most people.

- Research papers took forever without computer technology (librarian makes phone calls to other libraries to find the books, etc.)

- Endless re-typing on a typewriter (no cut and paste).

- If you travelled for business, carrying 25 lbs. of dimes with you everywhere for pay phones.

Come to think of it, &$#&^ the old days! I like it better now!

I remember when all the TV stations (3) signed off at midnight with the national anthem. And then the whole world was quiet. Spooky.
