Not quite computer recording, but about computers.

That looks interesting. I see that it's a beta version which doesn't allow for add ons like Firefox does.
Yeah you can tell it's just new, but it's still a hell of a lot better than IE.

If your computer is configured correctly with Firefox as your default browser and you don't use crap like remote desktop you really don't need a firewall.

Really? Not even the basic windows firewall? You may be right, but it helps me sleep at night ;)

Me too. I've removed Zonealarm and am just using the basic windows firewall now. Doesn't seem to have made too much of a difference, but I haven't really been testing the pc tonight.

One other thing to look at is . . . go to 'system information' and see if there are any 'problem components' in there.

I wouldn't have thought 1.8GHz DUAL CORE would be that slow.

Just to put it into respective. An Acer Aspire one netbook (£140's worth) runs a 1.6 GHz processor. The things your expecting are gonna need at least a 3GHz for smooth running. This is a big misconception when buying PC's now-a-days

Tis' a fact. Two 1.8 ghz cores sharing a 1 mb L2 cache is not gonna be a fast setup.

FWIW, I found that using the Resident Shield component of AVG really bogged the internet down. And set every auto-update feature you can find to manual. Also, if you're using a router w/ a firewall you can off-load firewall duties to it.

I also agree abt running w/o any AV. AVG had a kludgy phase a few months back, so I uninstalled it. I was using Opera, running CCleaner daily and surfing smart (easier to do if you're the only user.) I had zero problems.

Still, that's a slow chip.

This is never going to be a fast machine
Dual core at 1.8 ghz is potentially slower than a 4 year old single core pentium on a desktop.

Add vista into the mix which is more of a resource hog to start with (1 gb of RAM to run smoothly and more cpu cycles than XP just to have the desktop up and running)

Your best bet is going to be cutting as many system resources as you can while safely keeping the system stable. Start with obvious stuff like print spooler, remote access, windows updates (do these manually once a month), Lightscribe (if installed, Messenger services (if installed), uniteruptable power supply, etc etc etc.
Remove all of the junk ware that comes pre installed unless you are using it get something like REVO UNINSTALLER to completely remove all of the leave behinds and registry entrys that the Control pannel add and remove software leaves behind
Defrag once a month and don't allow your hard drive to fill up with clutter

Upgrade to windows 7 when available in 2010

However even with all of the above do not expect a lightning fast machine
