Not getting the quality I should with AT4040 + DMP3

The AT4040 is a great sounding microphone and it loves 48 volts on the phantom power. I tried it on less also :D and like bgavin said it sounded like ass! Be sure to stay on 48 volts and you'll be fine! :)

Here are my thoughts on your match up.

The DMP3 is very mid ranged focused not as detailed on the high end as say an RNP. QUOTE]

That's interesting that you say that. Most reviews of the DMP3 speak of how transparent and clean this pre is. I've always felt that it was a "middy" pre.

alright,

I got the 2496 now. my chain is as follows: 2496>DMP3>AT4040. the sound is very clean without any hiss, although the vocals are a bit too cold for my liking. i haven't laid any tracks yet because I'm still testing. i don't know if this is really a problem, but my vocals record at such high levels. i am about 2-4 inches away from the mic and the sensitivity is very strong. the gain knob on the DMP3 is not even tweaked. i use the -10db switch on the back of AT4040 the AT4040 and it seems to work but my vocals aren't as warm as they were with my SM58 and Mobilepre. i'm going to keep EQ'ing until I find the sound I want. thanks again for the help everybody.

2-4 inches is very close, unless for effect. I ususlly record at 12".

And that lack of warmth you are describing is clarity. Give your ears a chance to get used to it, and see how your vox tracks fit into a mix before reaching for the eq.

Beta 58 sounds great on some voices, I wish it did on mine - make things a lot simpler. Now if you're letting that AT4040 go for cheap ;)
