Not enough input level

I have a Dell Dimension 350mhz computer with a Yamaha DS-XG Soundcard. I'm running SoundForge 4.0 with a Mackie 1202-VLZ board.
I can not seem to get enough signal going into the soundcard to even register when I'm recording. I spoke with tech support at Dell and they told me my soundcard is not made to handle recording. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I'm getting very frustrated.

Any sound card can record, even if it's not a dedicated "recording" card.
