Hollow body electric guitars; the body is made out of aluminum. Has anyone played one or heard one live, and have an opinion about them? Do tell. Thanks.

Just google Normandy Guitars. Anyway, I'm hoping for a response from someone who is already familiar with them...

I admit, I know nothing about them. Just went to their website, and frankly, it looks like a bit of a gimmick. No where is a satisfying answer to the question "Why aluminum?" The best the site seems to say is, "Because it's not wood!" Although the comic book/CD press kit at NAMM was clever, I see no reason for that approach except to attract attention. May be nothing wrong with that, but there really should be some substance behind the flash, and I am just not seeing it. On the "Press" page, I didn't see much (actually, I didn't see any) lavish praise on how wonderful the guitars sound in the 2 or 3 paragraphs shown, just things about sustain, and mostly about how innovative it is to make archtops out of aluminum. If a hand-picked group of press clippings can't say any more than that about how those guitars work as "guitars," (not curiousities,) than I think I have seen enough, for now, at least.

In other words, the jury is still out.

You're probably right. On the other hand, why not aluminum? It's not like electric guitar players are looking for a natural wood sound. Perhaps, to be different.

What I should do is go down to Ludlow Guitars and play one. Maybe after the ice storm.

Don't get me wrong, I am not ragging on 'em, just that the aluminum construction appears to be a gimmick. By all means, go play one, and let me (us) know what you think.
