I never normalize and I don´t see a reson for normalizing... and as far as the console view... have you ever closed your eyes to try and pinpoint some musical part of a song on the radio or your living room stereo system?!! Well, sometimes, when mixing, if I´m looking at the track view, my attention will continue to focus on the same clips over and over, but if I switch to the console, I´ll have a different "point of view" of the song altogether. Sometimes I even turn off the monitor so that I can have only my ears focus on the song, and let them (my ears) decide what needs tweaking. I think that the console view is good for this, changing your auditive point of view of whatever you´re working on.

I must admit that I use both to mix in... I have the track view on me left hand screen and the console view on the right... depending on what I'm doing depends on which screen I look at. Of recent times all I'm looking at is the Console view... the Track view is handy to zoom in to see glitches in the wave form, but the console view as Carlos says, give you a different view of the song... you 'listen' to the song rather than 'watching' the song.

That's how my setup looks like. Well, sometimes the Console is closed in favour for the Piano Roll. I use the Console when mixing and the PR when recording MIDI. But I never cover the Track View with anything.

It's like this: The Track View is the program, it's necessary to work right. But the Consolve View is like the icing on the cake. It's just so much better with it... ;)

After all the editing is done, I use Console view, I use it all the time, when it comes time to just mix I don't need to look at track view, But then again I learned on a real console back in the mid 80's, So I'm a throw back:) , as was mentioned above...I use my ears!

Hey James,
Which Waves Ultramaximizer do you have, L1 or L2? I have the L1 and I am pretty happy with it but I noticed they've recently released the L2 and clam it's God's answer to all mastering and compression issues. Have you had a chance to use it, and is it worth the cheddar they're asking for it????

I only have L1 comes bundled with Waves 3.5 for editing and mixing only. I don't do mastering seriously, so I didn't have reason to actualy buy special mastering tools. I'm happy enough with L1 and haven't already tried L2 to compare with L1 :)
