P.S. The reason you couldn't get sounds like that out of a triton is because it is rom based. To get those "hard" sounds you need an analog modeling, or virtual analog synth. The nord is that, and as far as monsterous, nasty, hard, fat, etc. sounds, it does 'em best!
But I also love my Korg ms2000, it's got a great sound as well. And for the price, you can't beat it! About $600 USD new...
The waldorf and nova are great too. But like you said... Look on stage at your favorite acts and see what they are playing to make those sounds. It's usually a lead2 or lead3.
