I'm currently looking at either the Edirol FA-66 or the Presonus Firebox.

The Edirol seems to have a couple more handy features and less issues (CPU spiking etc) but it sounds like users prefer the sound of the mic preamps in the Firebox. I'll be using it for recording female vocals and instruments and was wondering if it's possible to bypass or overide the inbuilt mic preamps and use a separate (valve?) preamp? Is this likely to be necessary or is the difference in preamps so tiny it won't matter?

Thanks

You can use line inputs with either unit and bypass pre amps. But dont trick yourself into thinking a tube preamp is all that. For one thing, decent tube pres are alot of money, over a grand for anything good. For another, when most people talk tube, they are talking about the sound of a transformer based preamp and not a tube at all. Transformer based pres are really where its at. Look for the heavy iron.
