Noob question: How do I set my levels the RIGHT way?

I'm kinda new to mixing, but I want to record a demo for myself (guitar & vocals). I've got a portastudio (Tascam DP-02) & I'm only using this to record.

Could I have some opinions/advice on setting my levels correctly? I want every instrument to have an even sound & I don't want too many fluctuations in the overall sound recording.

Anyways, thanks!

Unfortunately the DP-02 records in 16 bit. That means you have a lot less dynamic range available than with 24 bit recording. Still, you need to leave yourself some headroom. Your input meters are rather imprecise, but if you set your inputs so the meter bounces into the top half without reaching the very top you'll probably be okay.

Avoiding "fluctuation" and getting an "even sound" is more a matter of performance than level setting.
