Noob question.. cant get hi hat channel working

I'll start with an appology! I'm new to recording so this may be a simple one but its got me stumped! I'm using a focusrite pro 40 with a PC, and can't seem to get any level on the 3rd mic that I'm adding to my project (currently have kick on channel 1, snare on channel 3 and attempting to add hi hat on channel 4). The mic I am adding is a (very basic) BEHRINGER C-1 condenser. I cant seem to get any level registering despite cranking the input signal right up. It doesn't register on either the pro 40 level indicator, or within cubase. Have tried a different lead, etc.

Any thoughts?? :confused:

Yep probably phantom power is not on, or perhaps you are using an XLR to 1/4' cable which will NOT work or even there might be a instrument/mic switch that needs to be switched to mic.
 
Ah.. think that might be it. I had tried with phantom power on and off, but I've connected with an XLR to 1/4" jack.

So does phantom power only work with an XLR to XLR? Also, on the Pro 40, phantom power can be switched on for either inputs 1-4 or inputs 5-8. If I have a condenser in input 4 and regular mics in inputs 1,2 and 3, will having phantom power turned on cause any problems?

Agreed but most hardware doesn't push phantom over 1/4" balanced only on the XLR. But that may be an option of your hardware supports it. Also those cable are a little hard to find so if you are not using it already jut buy an XLR, it'll be more useful in the long run.

agreed. i'm not familiar with that focusrite. wasn't sure if he was limited on xlr ins.
 
Side-note... why are you micing the hi-hat? Try two overheads and a kick mic...
