Noob mixer question

I was thinking about getting the Tascam portastudio 02. I want something portable and I just want to check out recording things with some friends of mine.

Now here is where I show my newby stripes: should I get a mixer for the thing for more inputs and which one. If not why?

It depends exactly how you intend on using it.

That recorder will only take 2 tracks in at a time. If you're recording live then yes you could just hook everything up to a mixer and then send a stereo out from the mixer to the 2 inputs on the Tascam. In fact you could do the same into a regular cassette deck but of course with the tascam you'd have a couple of extra tracks to play with if you wanted to overdub some stuff.

For good cheap mixers I like the Yamaha MG range.
