i've been trying to switch..(slowly but surely) to cool edit pro 2.0...from ntrack.

i got the basics of it...but:

1 - can i draw volume envelopes? (non destructively) any shortcut keys to do this?
2 - how can i move wave files to other tracks vertically (track to track), but being sure not to move anything but the .wav i WANT to move - and without it moving left or right at all.
3 - so i hit record...and i do a little bit of talking before i need to actually come in. How can i cut the first half of the wav to where i need it to, quickly and simply? same with the end of the wav. (i cant find any quick (NON DESTRUCTIVE) way to do this, like in ntrack).
4 - is there a shortcut key to turning on the rec. monitor levels?
5 - any other shortcut keys you guys use freaquently?
6 - i have the delta 44...when i am plugging in 4 mics at once - i can't seem to monitor the rec. levels of the 3rd and 4th mics...there are only 2 meters.
7 - since i am using the delta 44, what should i set my .wav's to (what resolution...right now i think its something like system 32-bit...since there is no 24bit option).

i think thats it for now, i'll come back with more as my problems come up! ha. thanks.

ha,...got another

8 - everyone messes up while recording. So i get a bad take, hit stop...now what? Ctrl+Z doesn't seem to work - it just changes colors of the track! lol. if i hit delete, who knows if it actually takes it off the hard drive...for all i know i'll have a million 10 sec. messup files randomly in folders!! so how do i really delete all those - and make sure they are GONE off the disk, or in the recycle bin?
9 - everytime i hit "save" or "exit" after i've been doing some recording, a million questions pop up about each wav file "save it? keep it? put it here? do this? do that?"...what am i supposed to put!!!? I mean, they are named wave1-45.wav etc. etc....i ask how the hell am i supposed to know what that file is and if i need it or not! lol

It's rather tedious but personally I name each file.
I take the songs working title and make an acronym so that "stairway to heaven" would have files like "STH guitar VS".
When I look in my sound files folder it's alphabetically arranged so this technique keeps that songs files together.

Just describe each track so you can remember what it is.

I think that any file not in use by the session(i.e..it's sitting in a track) when you close a session is deleted unless you specifically save it.

If you don't name each file you will have "track one(2)" "track one(3)". It will just keep adding to the name forever and you have no reference unless you open it and listen. But if you change the name there it won't open in that session again (It will ask you to locate it) So open your sessions and name every freakin' file.

If you get a bad take just record over it. Your changing that same file each time you mess with it. There is no old leftover "bad take"
unless of course you actively save bad takes. hhmmmm....Clean them out before you save the session or delete them or change them next time around.

And in case anyones not "there" yet, to name a file. double click it.Now your in edit view.Look in the top left "file" and then "save as".

In mulitrack view, go up the top and make sure that the two buttons shown in the picture are pressed. These are the (db) and the envelopes.

2 - how can i move wave files to other tracks vertically (track to track), but being sure not to move anything but the .wav i WANT to move - and without it moving left or right at all.
In multitrack view, right click on the file you want to move. Then click on LOCK IN TIME. This will ensure the wav won't move left or right but still will be able to move vertically.

3 - so i hit record...and i do a little bit of talking before i need to actually come in. How can i cut the first half of the wav to where i need it to, quickly and simply? same with the end of the wav. (i cant find any quick (NON DESTRUCTIVE) way to do this, like in ntrack).

There are two ways you can go about this. First in multitrack view hilghlight the part you want to delete and then press delete. This actually doesn't delete that part out of the file but deletes it in the session so you can't hear it. Second select the part/s you want to get rid of and open it in edit mode. Then go to EFFECTS-> SILENCE. This will silence that part/s of the wav. This will effect the actual wav file.

4 - is there a shortcut key to turning on the rec. monitor levels?

It's F10

7 - since i am using the delta 44, what should i set my .wav's to (what resolution...right now i think its something like system 32-bit...since there is no 24bit option).

select 3-byte Packed PCM

I don't think you can. You can only monitor two. You'll have to use the Control Panel that comes with the Delta.

Like alienelvis said, don't delete the tracks that you did bad takes on. Rather just record straight over them. This will only make one file instead of how many times you delete it for bad takes.

Hope that helps
