When I record MIDI I end up with a noisy track, both visually and audibly. What's going on? Is it as simple a getting better cables?
Any help would be huge! I know I didn't provide much info, if you need more, just ask.

Thanks,

Can you explain more about waht you mean "record MIDI" ? What OS, what Cakewalk, how do you route them, what's your MIDI device, soundcard, etc... etc....

FYI. MIDI is data signal, not audio signal... you don't "hear" MIDI.

When I record a midi track I use Sonar 2XL, a Midiman2x2USB, and a yamaha dtxpress eletronic drum kit. The sound card is a Darla 20, but I don't think that has anything to do with this.

By audibly I mean that there is "noise" on the track. It looks like various length lines starting from the bottom of the track. When these lines are played I hear a sound, usually a short buzz. Iwill try to post an image of what I'm seeing, I don't have one avaiable right now.

Thanks,

Your not using another sound card to play the sound back when recording are you?

Also, have you checked your cables? There might be some interference entereing your cable... I've know lights to add a 'buzz' onto a cable... all that, or your gain might be up too high on your sound card..

another sound card

Yep. I am using another sound card for playback. It's the integrated card in my D865PERL mainboard.

I haven't checked the cables. I wouldn't know how to. They haven't been used much. I don't recall how old they are.

Have you tried not using the second card for playback... I had a similar problem using two sound cards... when I playback on the same sound card no problem at all... I believe it has to do with the different clock sources out of sync or something similar.

Plus you say that you are using a mainboard card... the clock on those cards aren't the best, just use your Darla for playback.... plus make sure you change the clock source for playback and recording.

Why not just use the Darla for recording and playback (as Porter suggested)?

It's like you have Ferrari and a bike from the 50s. Both vehicles get you where you want, but the quality of the journey is not the same... ;)
