Just got a Taylor NS34. Love the neck, pretty good tone. After playing it for a week or so I noticed a strange whiney buzz on certain notes. Its a sort of metallic ringey rattley sound. Only on some notes and comes and goes. I took the strings off and looked around inside with a little mirror but didn't find anything loose or suspicious. Any luthier types out there with an idea of what might be goin' on???

I have no experience with that Taylor but with NS stringed electrics.
Best case scenario a broken winding if it is a wrapped string. It could also be plain old fret buzz. Have you lowered the action? adjusted the truss rod?

I'm not sure what they use piezo, expression system etc on that model. I've had cables vibrating against the back or sound board. Most Taylor are wired to eliminate this possibility but it is worth a shot

Sure sounds like broken string windings. Did you put new strings on after checking? If so, then it's not the windings. If you've still got the old strings on run your fingers down the wound strings, you can usually feel the broken windings.

I think RandyW is right. They used little plastic clips w/ double-sticky tape to route the cables. and one of them was completely unstuck. I removed it but still have the noise. Definately NOT fret buzz or loose winding. I'm thinking maybe I'll put little dabs of RTV here and there to stuck down the cables . It's non resonant and in small dabs shouldn't interfere with the sound. Opinions???????

listen closely and see if its coming from the saddle. my ns32ce did that and i reseated the saddle and restrung and it fixed it.

Thanks H2H....I'll try it. AN NS32 is like a 34 but thinner???

I have the same thing sometimes with a certain note on my Maton Messiah, not a cheap axe at all. It's like a resonant frequency that sets something ratting inside... most annoying - comes and goes and of course as soon as you take the strings off to get inside the beast it becomes a little difficult to work out what might be rattling... haven't yet managed to fix it...

Maybe I should just fill the whole thing with Space Invader.... that's stop it... :D
