Noise

Here's a screenshot of the meter of an armed audio track.
{in case the pic doesn't come through - it's reading -56 or so on the meter}

I have a Behringer V-Amp plugged into the Mic input of my soundcard.
But nothing is plugged into the V-Amp.

The noise goes down to around -68 or so with nothing plugged into the soundcard.
So I can see that the V-Amp is adding some noise.

I don't have a really expensive audio card (Steinberg Project Card, which is essentially an Audiotrak Maya).

Is this amount of noise normal? Or should I look into getting another soundcard?

I'm not familiar with the Behringer V-Amp, but it sounds like it's some kind of pre-amp for an electric guitar. If that the case, it should be plugged into your Line connection, not your Mic connection. Try that and see if your noise floor goes down. The Mic connection has a pre-amp in it - and probably a crummy one at that.

when you play through the V-amp, how loud is the signal you are getting into your software, and are you recording in 24bit?

if so (the 24bit part) and the signal is plenty hot, you could sacrifice a little noise by turning down the output volume on the V-amp.
