noise reduction

I did some searching on this site and on Sonic Foundry site but did not find anything in regards to sound reduction?
I'm still learning how to work this gear, and I have pretty good stuff, but I am bugged by the noise between songs. Also when I burn songs to a CD I have Noise.... Silence... Noise, where the Silence is almost like a click. Does anybody know what the hell I'm talking about??? How are commercial CD's soooooo quite between songs? Am I gonna have to buy more gear? (a cheap plug in would be nice). -John
 
Try messing with the Noise Gate in Sound Forge (I assume you're using Sound Forge by your mention of Sonic Foundry). If you have some noise at the beginning of your track you could select the dead space and make it silence and then zoom in as close as you can to where the music starts and do a short fade in from the silence to the start of the music. Do the same thing at the end of the song.

1) Are you saving the songs as seperate WAV. files?

2) What software are you using to burn your CD's?

3) What type of burner do you have?

Please explain your process of making CD's, so, we can problem solve the situation for you. ;)
 
You guys (and possibly girls) have NO idea how cool it is to ask questions on this forum and get responces (or maybe you do?). Anybody I know, has no idea what I'm talking about:

-Recording in Vegas (of course)
-Rendering to a stereo WAV. file
-Running OZONE on the WAV. file
-Saving each song individually
-Using NERO 5.0 to burn CD's onto
-An ATAPI (or something like that) CD burner. (I'm at work so I can't look at it).
-Noise is already present in the Vegas file, "silent gaps" appear after files are burn to CD's.

-I'll try the "gate thing" tonight.

Get sonic foundry´s noise reduction plugin. It works like a charm to get unwanted hiss and such out of the whole track. Noise gate´s has the problem that the noise is still there as soon as a sound comes in.
 
Thanks for your responce. Checked Sonic Foundry; Ouch! 280 bucks!!! Is there no end to this money gobbling hobby? This onces going to definatly kill the piggy (bank). Anybody out there know of any other plug-ins that work well for less dough, or is this one of those "If you wanna play, you gotta pay" scenerios? -Johnny McGhie
 
Why are you having so much trouble with noise? I would hate to see you spend so much money on a NR plugin, when that money would be better spent on hardware that will produce LESS noise to begin with. All the NR I have used has done a great job at taking out the noise, but adds a serious color to the sound. Its a nice tool, but almost useless for serious recording in the sense that a good RECORDING is ultimately what you need to make happen.
 
Thanks for all of your responces. I have learned several things:

First (I'm a little embarrassed to say)
-Use of the Volume envelope.
-Use of the Mute Event feature.
(Hey I said I was new at all this stuff).

-And to make the Artist TURN UP!!! (I had these shy little guitarist who had there amps on 1).


Thanks for saving me the bucks for a Plug-in. Hopefully this will help some other dumb newbee like me...
