Noise Reduction

I record music on a digital 4 track and then record it with my sound card through the line in... its ok, but there is just a tiny amount of background static that totally degrades the overall quality of the track. Recently I was playing around with CoolEdit2000's noise reduction feature and figured out I could completely remove the background noise but at the same time I lose a lot of the actual sound in the song. Does anyone have any tips or links to tutorials on the best way to do this or any other software and/or suggestions on how I can solve this?

Whatever frequencies Cool Edit identifies as noise will be removed from the sound you want to keep as well. At least that's my experience. Noise reduction only works well if there's just a l_i_t_t_l_e bit of noise to remove.

An Effective Noise Reduction

Try recording just a blank signal with what ever inherent noise is in your planned recording (poor sound card, guitar buzz or what ever). Make sure it's about 1/4 of a second long and take it into noise reduction...
There select all the appropriate quality options and click on "Get Profile From Selection"
Cooledit will take a snap shot..
leave Noise Reduction for a moment..
record what ever instrument you wanted to record..
when finished, return to noise reduction and simply click ok..
this should remove most of your noise without producing any of those "computer puke" artifacts...


btw..
my noise reduction settings are
FFT Size: 4096
Precision Factor: 8
Smoothing Amount: 1
Transition Width: 0

and usually I keep the noise reduction level to HIGH...

if any one has any suggestions for more effective settings please tell me..
