Are these very effective and do they cope with the noise you get when you are not touching the strings

Anyone tried the MXR Smart Gate? That's the one I'm after.

i've got the Boss NS-2 and it works great.

side note: what do you think about using a Boss noise suppressor pedal and Boss Compression Sustainer? I'm not so sure how they would "talk" to each other, being the compression sustainer is telling it to hold out the sound longer, and the gate/suppressor is like shut the hell up. thanks in advance

I use the NS2 and the CS3 together, and they work fine. Just run the compressor in the noise gate's loop and it works great!

I love both of those pedals, I couldn't live without them.

If you've already got a Guitar Rig going with a rack and such, check out the Rocktron Hush racks, or if you want a pedal, check out the Rocktron Hush. The NS2 is also very good, but for some reason i'm a big fan of Rocktron stuffs

I use the ns-2 and it works great, I haven't tried any other one though, but the guy at my local music store says the smart gate is the hot seller!!

Thanks boys, I'll check them out, the noise is only present when I have the tone controls up high and I take my fingers off the strings, gets on my wick.

Hmmm. If it's not making noise when your fingers are on the strings and not playing but it does when you take them off, then you may have a grounding problem with your guitar or amp.

with the tone controls turned down ie. bassey, no noise with my fingers off the strings, the noise increases as I turn the tone control up, ie. adding treble, just crappy tone controls I recon

Another vote for the ISP Decimator. It takes away all extraneous noise and doesn't cut off notes once you've properly adjusted the level.

Just something to check regarding the noise: my Godin LG (with humbuckers) was dead quiet in the morning, noisy as hell at night. Turned out to be the fluorescent lights in my garage.
