Hiya!
Just wondering if there is a noise reduction tool in Reaper, like that found in cool edit or audition etc?? I.E. where you can select the noise, get a profile of it, and then remove that noise from the entire track?

What is ReaFir and why can it only do some of that?

I'm not sure what you mean?

If you havent downloaded REAPER yet, go ahead and do it so you can see.The demo is fully functional, and its only 3 megs, so its no sweat to try

insert an audio track and click the fx button.

In the filter list, type "reaf" and itll filter out plugins until you see it

Fire up ReaFIR

ReaFIR is an FFT processor that can do multiple bands of eq, compression, gating, convolving and subtracting. For noise reduction chose the "Subtract" mode from the mode drop down

Click the box to check "Automatically build noise profile" and loop a noisy section till you have a fingerprint

Uncheck the box and play over the rest of the audio and see if its got it

Thanks for the info!
Sadly it's not that easy to just try it out, as my studio is presently completely down, so it's for a computer system that doesn't exist yet!! :)

I'm thinking I could go Linux!
It's been suggested to me a few times in the past but the idea always used to be a joke as the AV situation on Linux used to be appaling and a waste of time even thinking of, however now there is Jack and Reaper and Ardour and it seems like some of my windows apps are so ancient that they may well run under wine too (another adveantage of having run an old computer all this time).

The big problem is going to be getting the hardware to run whatever, in paticular keeping it all quiet. I realise now this was actually the real reason I was using that ancient piece of junk all this time anyway, (no CPU fan and the quietest PSU I ever came across)

I'm trying to work out ways that I can improve my situation as a result of whats happened.

Although I'm now thinking of seeing if I can't fix the old thing! lol!
