Is there a way to get rid of background hiss electronically without the use of a gate? In the past, I've cut frequencies where the hiss is most prominent, but that also carves out that frequency from the track. Gates are nice, but only remove hiss from areas without music. I suppose there may not be an answer, except a better signal chain and a quieter room.

there are denoisers on the market.. but they're not magic. (none that i've found)

if you're seeing a lot of hiss on your tracks that you can't fix with the standard methods.. EQing, noisegates.. then you probably need to find a way to track without it. once noise is already there you only have two options.. leave it or compromise your sound to get rid of it.

i'd go back and find some way to optimize the chain and quiet the room.

there is no cure for a noisy room but to fix the room itself.. if there were a dog in your room barking you certainly wouldn't want to track and then try to take it out with effects.. same thing if you got air conditioners and refrigerators going in the background :)

I agree with homie but I don't think you were talking about dogs in your track. His point is still valid. The hiss is coming from and outside source(out side the mixer that is) you need to correct the problem before you record your tracks. old wires, trashy mic, computer feedback, even your house can cause hiss if the wiring is not grounded right. all in all you fix what you can and cover up the rest.

Thanks for not bitchin at me to just get a better set-up. You guys actually gave me some good advice (y'know, what these forums were initially meant for :p )

Anyways, I know I need better cables, and I need a better mixer. I'm pretty sure most of my noise is coming from the fact that I'm recording from a Rolls mini-mixer which does not have any mic-pres. I just have the volume turned up quite a bit. So rather than a new soundcard, I'm probably going to go ahead and get a better mixer, cables, and probably a dynamic mic of some sort, probably an sm57 (the only type I have right now is an Audio-Technica atm31 small condenser). Oh, and I'll buy those "silent" fans that my computer yearns for ;) . ::sigh:: If only I have an expendible budget.

Thanks again guys!
