Noise Gate Recommendation?

Well actually I'm from the planet- do some research and find a good drawmer unit used. I found some of their low end stuff in mint condition used on ebay and other auctions and have paid and seen them go for a little over $250.

New, yeah they are pricy as hell and agreed there is a lot better things to do with $1000 than purchase a gate!!! lol But seriously if you find anything used and in good condition, its worth it. Yeah also the DBX stuff kicks ass and is cheap, DBX is the sh*t

wow....I searched out everyone's recommendations.....found a Behringer for $69 on e-bay, a dbx for $40 (although not the recommended model), couldn't find any KepexII (except on a couple studio equipment lists), no sign of the Samson on e-bay (which I took as a good sign actually) and checked out the Drawmers, Symetrix and some others....and then I did one last thing.....I read the FlextoneII XL's manual.....and wouldn't you know the thing has a noise gate! Apparently you hold down the tap tempo button and turn the reverb knob to switch it on or off! It works fine too...Damn! Who'd have thunk it!?...certainly not me!! Duh!

Anyway, just thought I'd post how things turned out. Thanks again for everyone's input. I do appreciate it.

Those PreSonus 8 channel compressor/gate boxes had useable gates. I think the original model was called the ACP 8, later replaced with the ACP 88 which had a lot more lights and looked prettier. If you can find a used ACP 8 you'd be getting 8 decent gates (as well as compressors) for probably not a whole lot of money.

I hear what you're saying MAC2 I loved the gate on the pod...I started recording direct from amp and noticed the difference. I use my Alesis 3630 as a gate sometimes if I'm desperate. I don't advise that however it's gates are toys...the compressor however is alright...

hee hee.:p

Seriously, they make snapping and scratching sounds.

The Behringer gate will serve you well, and is awfully damn cheap for how well it works!

If you can though, find the older model. The new stuff isn't quite as tight as the older ones were.

littledog: thanks....I'll look into what Presonus has to offer....8 gates in one unit...interesting...

jake: now that I figured out how to work the gate on the Flextone I'm happy with it for guitar tracks. It only took me a year to finally read the manual and find out there was a noise gate in there!!:o

Hi Ed: until I discovered the gate in my amp I was leaning towards the Behringer or Samson (mostly 'cause the price was right ;) )....but since I don't have any current projects pending I won't be buying anything for now. Always glad to get your take on things....thanks!

I had some experience using the pod for recording guitar tracks and it had a noise gate on it.....worked really well.....anyway I went and bought a FlextoneII XLPLus thinking I was getting a pod in an amplifier....I was wrong, there is NO noise gate on it.

It does have a noise gate; hold tap & turn the reverb knob to past 12'o'clock.

Yeah, I have the Presonus ACP-8. All things considered, it's worth keeping around for years to come... As my outboard gear isn't that massive yet...

If find the gates either work perfectly or not at all... I never know until I actually run the signal into the channel and hearing what results I can get.

When the ACP-8 doesn't work, I use the only other gate I own... It's an Aphex 622 modded by Audio Upgrades. Talk about gate heaven! It wasn't cheap, I think I paid a total of $400 or something for everything, but I figured I should have one of the best (if not the best) gates around here to for the occasional critical gating times.

As for the ACP-8 compression, I never used it all that much in the past due to always having other compressors around. But within the past year, I've discovered how useful they actually are when I want the compressor to be heard. Now I use it quite often!

There are lots of good gates out there and if your at a budget of $100 to $150 then a Behringer or something similar will do what you can for that price. The Drawmers would be my first choice when upgrading from there. I agree that gates are often a fix for problems as in a bandaid of some sort. Gates are used quite often in controlling things a certain way. Gating a snare for effect is a very popular use and anyone with a real 100 watt tube amp knows what gates are used for in that situation. My Marshall 1/2 stack is gated all the time, I love the way its get clamped the instant I stop... The band Static-X uses gating the same way.
