I have made some recordings on the mr8 and they have a ton of fuzz. My latest one used a bass recorded direct, an amp close miked and drum loops. When I listen to them with good headphones I hear a ton of fuzz. I listen to other people's mr8 projects and I hear little fuzz. Any ideas? You can listen to my newest song. It is called lap guitar

I listened. You have the trim turned up too high and your getting digital clipping. Turn it down and it won't sound like that.

pat. for recording the bass instead of plugging the bass direct into the mr8 try this. find a used bass rockman cheap or a bass processor device. and plug the bass into it - then into the mr8. and see if things improve. one other thing you might test out before buying. try to rent for a test a good vocal mic preamp like a dmp3 say , and your sig chain would look like this...
mic>>>mic pre >>>line input of mr8.
also try the mic pre on a guitar amp.
if STILL you get a noisy signal then i would suggest either one of your cables might be bad or your guitar amp is very noisy. in the latter case
you might need to get a noise gate device before sending signals to the
mr8. one final point - grounding. sometimes noise loops can develope when plugging a guitar amp into a seperate home electrical outlet than
a guitar amp. other sources of noise can be dimmers in a home or fridges or anything with motors. when recording - ensure any dimmer lights are set to their off position. also to ensure you dont get ground loops - try this.
plug a power bar (surge protected) into a home outlet THEN plug your mr8
into it AND ALSO your guitar amp into the power bar for power.
the essence of this is called the star grounding electrical system.
when you get time - read up on it sometime.
if you get seriously into building a studio at some point consider installing
via a competent electrician what is known as an ISOLATED POWER LINE
for your studio. the idea of this being a clean isolated electrical source to power your studio seperate from the rest of the circuits in your home.
but theres no need to do this at this stage. its purely info for you to think on for the future. peace.

noise

1. are you listening to the headphones through the mr8, the headphone amps have a buzz in them, they all do , turn the unit on and off and itwill fix it
2. is the red light by the trim knob flashing when you record, the trim is too high,
3. how high is the volume on the bass
get a bass amp and mic it, guitars, and run vocals through a mixer , better then just a preamp you will get eq conrol and phantom power for condensor mics

my mr8 has no noise, at all, completly silent..... clean strong recordings, great sound recordd, then moved to the pc for mixing with software, i like n track

OK I will try your suggestions and report back when I get a chance. If anybody else has some ideas tell me please.

Ifinally got a chance to listen to lap guitar, it is quite good. I think it is probably true you are overdriving the input stage and getting some distortion, but overall your recording sounds good.

Work out your little issues and I believe you can produce great music.

I get alot of white noise, like a tape hiss on my MR-8. I am sure it's from the mic, but what things should I do to eliminate this in a bedroom situation?

A mic pre amp will help you out a lot. The pre amp will boost your signal so that you don't have to turn the gain up so high. This will reduce the hiss and other white noise you are getting.

Thanks, I am using a presonus mic pre amp but i'm not so sure how good it is since I have never had another one to compare it to. But so I understand, I want to turn the trim down and boost the mic pre amp up right? Thanks for the tip.

Yep. Keep the trim knob turned down, and boost the gain on the pre amp first, then adjust the trim knob....

  1. go to local supermarket/walmart
  2. purchase disposable razor
  3. shave recording

If you have any more question, please feel free to ask.

I'm thinking of starting my "Cellardwelling FAQ".

Apologies to patlang12.
It reaaallly is necessary at times for me to amuse myself. :D
Even though no one in the world sees the humor, I am usually enjoying the hell out of myself.

I'll begin my FAQ at once, seeing as it may help even one of my brethren.

I don't know if it'll help - but I see the humor...

No apologies needed. I thought it was funny and now that you are making an FAQ I have to thank you. Please report when it is ready.
