My old lady asked me to do this song, and there's no way I could do it "properly", so I went apeshit and did it my own way. :p

No Woman No Cry

I did it kind if quick and nasty, so let me know what might need mix-wise. Any comments are welcome.

Thanks.

Greg

And thanks to DWillis for this pic. :D

Sounds great to me! The only thing that immediately stood out to me is the cymbals are just too crushed/compressed. You can really hear the cymbals ambience pumping/breaking apart between r/l channels a little too much. Dunno how to describe it exactly but backing off the compression would probably help.

The overheads aren't compressed at all. Ya think it's the master compression doing it? I think the overheads may be a little too loud which is probably getting hammered by the master compression. Maybe?

Thanks for listening.

You are a jealous hatter with bad tooths.

Wow - my wife just wants me to put all my shit away and do some laundry.

I like the tom-dominated bridge -- mixing sounds great on my dinky monitors.

Performance is fantastic as usual.

That's what it sounds like to me. That's the same sound I hear when I move the threshold down too much on my L3.

Aside from that, this ROCKS....or actually, this PUNKS...big time.

The rythm guitars and drums are locked in perfectly, along with the bass. Your vocals are awesome for this.

If you had put this out at a time when bands doing this style were big, you would have had a huge hit. It's the perfect song to cover for this style because the reggae-ness of it, mixed with the punk, makes sound like Ska on acid. Very cool!

Thanks a lot dude. You wanna do my laundry too? :D

Nice version, Greg L!

Great performance and mix - as usual.

Ciro

Thanks for checking it out Rami. I was pretty reluctant to butcher this song at first, but it ended up being a lot of fun.

I'm gonna remix this thing and try to tame the overheads and master compression more.

Turned into a real punch somebody you love punk song. Nicely done, the guitars sound great. I liked the bridge too. Souinds like what I wish a lot of those ska bands I hated shouldv'e sounded like. Peppy stuff Greg.

I admit, I hate reggea....BUT THIS IS WAY COOL!:D...'cos it ain't reggea....

Lol. That's my checkbook. I'm balancing it. :D

Thanks for listening.

Updated mix up top in the original link. Tamed the overheads some to hopefully balance the cymbals out a little better.

They're still pretty wild, but I think this may be as good as it's gonna get. My room is not the best drum recording room, so I think I'm getting tons of reflection. Oh well, it's only rock and roll. :D

good one gerg but siouersly your teh ramowns in dis guise arent you lol

Thanks Riffmaster. :)

Your drum sound is my biggest envy :D :D
Oh, hey, I gotta get me one of those cheque-books.....

Holy carp! I know I hate covers but this RULES. RULES I TELL YOU!! Very nice. Awesome rendition. I love everything about it. Great work!

Well, thanks. I try to do the best I can with what I got. I need to build some clouds and traps and stuff for this room.

If more people did covers like this the world would be PERFECT! :)

Greg,
I approach this with caution as I LOVE this song - I bought the album when it 1st came out (Rastaman Vibrations - to my mind the BEST Marley album post Peter & Bunny)
I like your version - it emphasises the misunderstanding I had of the lyric _ I 1st understood it to mean if you don't have a woman you won't end up in torment.
This is a punkska'd version that the Mighty Mighty Bosstones would pay good money for.
You get the spliff & nod of approval from this old sicko who saw Marley two nights in a row in '77.
ONLY 1 suggestion. I'd OD an extra guitar playing up the ska riff. As it stands though I give it 2 ceremonial tricolour berets, a bottle of rum and Bunny Wailers toenail clippings - it's that good!

This is great! Personally, I love reggae (maybe is an island thing) and even this doesn't resemble anything near reggae, you've done justice to a great song. A brass section in this would be killer! Great work as always, bud.

Quick and nasty, I hear that's the way you screw. :)

This is a ton of fun, as is pretty much everything you do. You're a punk at heart, it shows in your playing, and especially your singing. I'd slam dance, but the cats are too small, I'd hurt them..

And we'll get blkdog7 converted, I'm sure of it. :D

Ha ha, this is great. I gotta go take some more blood pressure medicine now. Yeah, that's what we'll call it. :D

You nailed the vocals and I'm lovin the kick. Good suggestion on the wife's part.

Cool man.
