No sound from speakers when using line-in

I have an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 card. and Altec lansing 621 speakers.

I've got a Shure SM57 mic going into a Behringer preamp and into the line-in on the card.

Here's the problem. I hear absolutely nothing from the speakers.

HOWEVER, Cool Edit monitors the line-in and the levels change...so I know sound is getting through, I am just not hearing anything...if I hit record for a couple seconds and then play it back, it DOES play the audio through the speakers...but I hear nothing from the speakers when i am just speaking into the mic without recording. Yes, the levels are up and the line-in is not muted...I am really stumped here.

Any ideas?

The same happens when i plug ANY audio source into the line-in...not just the Mic setup.

Im not sure if the Revolution uses the same Control Panel as the rest of the Delta card, but it sounds like one of the settings there is wrong......

I'm not familiar with this soundcard and its control panel so I can't be of that much help but you should look for some kind of monitor setting. The line-out should be set to monitor what comes in through the line-in.
It's kind of logical that it doesn't work just like that. Soundcards aren't usually set up so that what comes in through the line-in is directly forwarded to the line-out.

Most non-musicians will even say: What's the point of that?? :D

Sounds like a software problem. There are some cards that offer zero latency monitoring, and some that don't (which require you to use latent software monitoring). In either case, I'd plug a set of headphones into the monitor jack of your mixer and you're home free. I use an 10-in, 10-out C-Port and this is more or less what I do, and it works like a charm. No latency to contend with.

I would just hazard aguess towards what Gidge said, and christian. If the control panel is anything like the other m-audio stuff, you probably have to click around in the patchbay area and find out what works. Every setup is different, but generally speaking if you set it to a monitor setting you should hear something. Also make sure in the area of levels that none of them are muted.
