No sound from gigastudio...sometimes

I had a computer built for gigastudio:

Athlon XP (1.8GHz)
512 MB RAM
Drive A - 20MB (OS and gigastudio)
Drive B - 40 MB (giga library)
PCI-822 card (cam bundled with giga)
Windows XP

I installed gigastudio and giga piano, everything seemed to go well. I also installed the PCI-822 drivers. I connected the PCI-822 SPDIF output to the SPDIF in on my aardvark Q10 and connected the aardvark to my monitors. My midi keyboard is connected to the MIDI #1 channel of the PCI-822.

When I start gigastudio and load the piano, I can see the MIDI activity indicator in giga light up when ever I play my midi keyboard, but no sound comes out of my monitors. What is stranger is that if I load a CD in my computer it plays just fine through my monitors. Somehow the CD audio is getting to the PCI-822 and out the SPDIF interface to my monitors but giga doesn't seem to be sending anything to the SPDIF port.

I've looked at the system settings within giga and can't find anything that looks wrong....WTF???

Any ideas???

Thanks!

Phyl,

My audiocard has Internal and External synch.

If I want to play a CD I have to synch External. When I'm using my sequencer I must synch Internal.

Try that first, and if it still doesn't work get back to me and we'll try to work our way through the problem.

I've got it set to internal sync right now. When I set it to SPDIF all I get is white noise out of the SPDIF outs.

My assumption was that since my PCI-822 is generating the output SPDIF signal, it needs to use internal sync instead of looking at the incoming SPDIF port to derive sync.

...or not....

Phyl,

I found this in a review of the Aardvark Q10 from May 2002:

PROS: Extensive routing capabilities. Intuitive Control Panel. Good-quality preamps. Clean sound.

CONS: Drivers only for Windows 95, 98, and ME. No MIDI-based controller automation.

Thay may be your problem Phyl, no XP drivers. :(

You'll also need GSIF drivers for use with GigaStudio.

My suggestion is to remove the Aardvark, then see if you can get your PCI-822 to behave properly.

If you do have XP drivers for the Aardvark, I'd still recommend trying to get each of the cards to work by themselves without the other.

When that happens, we can look at getting them to communicate.

I must ask though, why would you want to very high quality audio cards in the one PC?

STOP PRESS! I see from Aardvark Audio's web page that there are now GSIF & XP drivers available.

Anyway, Phyl, have a look at Aardvark Trouble Shooting. You may get the answer there.

Thanks BlluesMeister.

The description of my setup was probably a little confusing. My Aardvark and gigastudio are hosted in separate ccomputers; I'm feeding the gigastudio SPDIF out into the Aardvark SPDIF in.

I ended up e-mailing gigastudio tech support. All I needed to do was diasble outputs 1-8 (TDIF) and enable outputs 9-10 (SPDIF) on my PCI-822 card in the giga computer.

Doh!

Glad you got it sorted Phyl. GS is an awesome program. :)
