No sound chan 5/6 on MG12/4

This is a really dumb question but is driving me nuts. I have a MG12/4 mixer and am trying to use 5 microphones. There are 6 xlr inputs, 1-4 and 5/6, 7/8. I can get sound from 1-4 just fine. But no mater what I do I can't get any sound on chan 5/6 or 7/8 with a mic xlr connected. I've swapped cables and mics so I know I must be doing something wrong. I've tried everythign I could think of and the manual is not much help; nor is Yamaha's site. I'm using both condensor and dynamic mics. Is there some special setting I have to do? I have a delta 1010 and am using sonar.

Thanks!

Hmmm so I figured out channel 5 channel insert is really a line input so the xlr input / line input were causing no sound to come out. I now get a signal at the mixer, and I'm using the stereo out to send it to channels 5/6 on my 1010. I can now get sound in sonar, but did I hook this up the right way?

going out of my mixer i use the first four insert i/o jacks directly to ports 1-4 of my 1010, that's how I get my mics into sonar. i don't want to mix on the board, i want to mix in sonar which is why i'm not sending everything out on the group or stereo bus.

does this all make sense? forgive my severe lack of understanding. any help would be appreciated.

Yeh I think you've got a handle on it OK.

If you pan channel 5/6 hard left, you'll see the signal in input 5 only on the 1010. Then you can plug another mic into mixer channel 7/8, pan that hard right, and get that into input 6 through the stereo out.

You can do the same for channels 9/10 & 11/12 if you need to record other instruments through the line-ins. Except you'd pan and route these channels to the Group outs, and get the signals into inputs 7 & 8 of the 1010.
