when i didnt have a mixer i used the line in and mic inputs on my sound card and used the pc mixer in windows

i don't record with it much (mackie 1604 vlz pro). i mostly use the fmr audio rnp, so i'm not actually going through the mixer when i record, but i've got all my midi gear patched into the mixer so i can compose. then i use the rnp when i'm ready to record.
up until a year ago, i mixed in software only, but now i have a tascam us-428 that i use as a physical mixer for my virtual tracks in sonar.
