no mike signal in omni 1/0

Hi everyone.
i just purchased this omni studio and i have a very very annoying problem.
ive already sent an email to m-audio but i was wondering if you guys could help me out as you always seem to.
i realise that its quite long but i would great appreciate any help on the matter.

when i plug my mike into either of the mic inputs on the omni i/o there is no signal present anywhere.

i have tried routing it differently and following tutorials but i still get no signal at all.

all the buttons at the back are depressed and my mike is a dynamic so does not need phantom power.

all my equipment is brand new apart from the omni studio which i purchased secound hand a few days ago.

i only have one mike so i cant try switching that.

i have to xlr leads and have tried switching them.

i tried hooking the xlr out on my guitar amp up to the mic input on the omni and still nothing.

i get no signal or noise when plugging in my xlr leads.

i get a quick signal that shoots up and then down when i press the pad button in and out.

the HIz instrument inputs work fine.

the monitor outs and headphone outs work fine.

whats the problem?

okay. i phoned m-audio, they seemed to think it could be a faulty preamp chip. said it would cost about £40 to repair. anyone think this is the right diagnosis.
