i have been using my SBLive to record stuff....and now all of the sudden, no signal is going in anymore, i have even tried Mic Input...the level in the mic input is so low and it sounds distorted. Does that mean my card is busted? What can i do about it? Get a new one? Help... :(

Not necessarily. The mic input will sound crappy like you described. In fact, you should disable it via the volume control.

Try to think of what might have changed. Make sure that your source is actually sending a signal to the card and that it's strong enough. Make sure that the cable is good and plugged in correctly. Make sure that the Line-Input in the volume control is enabled and the slider is up all the way (check BOTH recording and playback).

While it is possible, it would be a rare occurance for the soundcard to be broken such that everything works but line-in. Test everything else first.

Unless you had it plugged into a guitar amp speaker output or something crazy, I would suspect a setting like S2K says, or a new installed software problem...

Rare? well that's pretty subjective since I've only owned one soundblaster, but this was the exact scenario when the line in jack on my SB Awe32 went south. Everything else still worked, but no line in.

Sorry, I thought it would be rare. :) Usually things seem to die all or nothing and I've seen so many people assume broken hardware when it was something much less severe.

Maybe soundblasters have weak line-in ports, or maybe their built so well that the line-in port can physically blow without taking anything else with it.

I hope that, as Dragon suggested, he didn't plug his speaker out into the thing or something :) :(

Thanks doc. Was there any warning when the line in port on your SB went out? Seems like there'd be a moment of "oh crap" right before noticing that it didn't work anymore. Maybe an "oh....I guess that doesn't go in there...." :)

Like most things that go wrong in my studio, I blame my cats. I think they leaned a little too hard on the plug while it was inserted in the jack leading to premature connective failure. But I think these cats had good taste in soundcards, leading me away from the miniplug to the much more macho 1/4" format.
My Gina hasn't shown such fragility.
As to the "on the way out symptoms":
The card had a little static on one channel
which progressed to static on both channels
which progressed to no sound on one channel
and finally no sound on either channel. This
only affected the line in jack. Everything else worked just fine. Still does. I think?
But for me the point is moot.

nope......the only thing which was plugged was my synth out.... ;(

Unfortunately, SoundBlasters have the same reputation here that Bayliners have over on rec.boats...

I had the same problem. I called the company and they said to go into your control panel. Double click on Audio HQ which is a virtual mixer. You have to set the recording device as line input.
