Here is the set-up right now. Audio Technica 4033 as overhead, a little bit to the oposite side of the snare because it pics up lots of snare. sm-57 on the snare, above and slanted towards the head, about an inch away. akg c-900 (it's a stage vocal condenser) on the hi hat above top symbol, slanted down towards the top, about 2 inches away. beta 52 on kick, with back off, it is about 1 to 2 inches from the beater, a little off center from the beater and pointed at about a 45 degree and away, towards the front head. Right now the drums are on a platform in the big room of the studio. it sounds pretty good, if a little airy. we also have an iso booth. the walls are very reflective. vocals sound like they are being recorded in a bathtub. i have yet to try the drums in there. i was thinking of lining the walls with blankets for some absorbtion. any suggestions, comments would be very much appreciated.

Agree on the hi hat

Do you have a stereo pair of small condensors or could you borrow some? Rode NT5s are great since they have a soft top end that makes the cymbals more silky. Any other good small condensors will do - you need to use them as overheads about 3 feet off the top of the snare and toms. You should really use two overheads to get more balance. I would use the AT4033 as a "front" room mike pointed at the middle of the kit about6 feet away. Put a mattress along the wall opposite the kit and behind a room mike. Mike your toms separately with dynamics- Sennheiser 421s are perfect for this. You will get a great stereo sound using panning on these mikes. The rest of your set-up sounds fine. The blankets along the walls are definately a good idea.
 
wall padding

I have had great success using carpet padding lining the walls. I covered a 20 x20 foot room for 100.00 . I just used button cap nails to hang the padding to the wall.
