No DirectX9.0c?

Off the wall question kind of, Im trying to get direct x to work on my sons computer. I just rebuilt it.A game he has requires Directx9.0c. I downloaded it ,no problem but still no go for the game, comes up with error saying I need DirectC9.0C GRAPHICS ADAPTER. Can someone explain this a little more to me? I have DirectX downloaded but is there something lacking with the videocard? I checked manage addons to make sure something wasnt un- checked.
Windows XP OS.

The video card may not be directX 9.0 capable. What kind of machine/Vid card is it?
 
I second the above post. If you're unsure, post the model of graphics card.

Also, try reinstalling the game if you haven't already.
 
thanks to both of you, I never thought of that, its a compaq presario about 6 years old, I'll bet thats it!
