I recently decided to build a home studio of sorts. Yes, im the type that went to guitar center and spent way to much. now that thats out the way, i have no clue what im doing. I purchase pro tools 9 w/ mbox mini, a set of m-audio BX5a monitors, a AKAI MPK mini, and for the microphone i got a sterling audio ST55 fet condenser. no clue what im doing. I am fairly confident i have set up everything correctly. pretty simple actually. Thru trial and error i have figured out how to make the speakers work and how to mute them, headphones working, microphone working....well i can hear myself, etc, etc.. and thats about as far as ive gotten. I've tried to find videos or stuff on the web to break down pro tools 9 without anything actually helping(everything seems to be pro tools 8, without paying of course). I cant get the MPK mini to give off any sound. I cant seem to record in pro tools wth the mic. i know all the pro stuff about mixing and mastering comes later, but i just need to know how to record and make the MPK mini working. Am i missing something...or just not understanding whats staring me in my face? jumping into pro tools is very overwhelming. Sorry to be such a scrub. im at the point where im considering going to classes. i really want this to work.

That might actually not be a bad idea, considering you've gotten all this gear and you haven't figured out how to work it all smoothly yet.

Another problem is that you went and bought stuff without really knowing a lot about it. If you had come here first, we could have walked you through question by question! We still could, but it might be more tricky ;)

As for tutorials, I'd search youtube. It has everything :)

You will need to load a driver on your computer the get the MPK to work. Go to AKAI's website.

thx i just dowloaded the tutorial videos. exactly what i was looking for. Everything i found before was for pro tools 8 or pro tools 7. Finding this forum after the fact was a bit unfortunate on my part but learn and learn i guess. About the drivers i tried it and it a no go. No idea why...
