no bollocks...just requiring feedback

As always, posting new tracks as the accident occurs, to the board looking for feedback (not page hits). This sombre ditty is called "Negotiate A Space", and can be streamed/downloaded at http://mp3.com/ulcerate. This is probably my most straight-forward track to date, then again straight-forward for me, is freaky for most. [Consider me the resident Einsturzende Neubauten fan] I think it sits fairly comfortably in the Alternative Rock genre.

The track was recorded completely direct, aside from vocals (duh), with guitars and bass run through POD units. Guitars also running through a Line 6 DL-4 unit and no tune of mine is complete without an e-bow track or two (just try and pry it from my hand when I die!). Bass is kinda funky/growly with a little grind and some flange. A little dissapointed with the sound quality of the bass line due to dead strings, but I can live with the result for an elaborate demo. Drums are from my usual bastardised collection of pro and homemade samples & loops.

Vocals recorded on a Rode NT-1 into my tiny Behringer mixer just using the stock mic pre's. All tracks run through the mixer into my PC which has the still un-upgraded SB Live card in it. Software used is Cool Edit Pro and Waves and Hyperprism plugins.

Hope some of you can once again spare the time to take a listen and offer some valued constructive criticism :)

Cheers

Simon

P.S. No...there's no reverse reverb on the track!

I'm not an expert, but I know what I like. I like this.

Very airy/spacy. The dynamics in the track were also very interesting. I loved the way the guitars were sitting in the back of the mix - that's something I'm struggling with trying to accomplish.

I know you want constructive criticism, but if something doesn't jump out at me, I don't feel comfortable "looking" for something that's bad or can be improved. If there is anything I would look at, perhaps it would more variation in the lead vocal.

In my view (fwiw), quality of the recording/mix not an issue.

I like it a lot, only thing I can think of is maybe bringing up the lead vox a bit. They are hard to understand, cause they are low in the mix. You have a good voice, and it sounds awesome, just not loud enough. Really like it.

thanks for the nice comments. I agree on the vocal problem, it's tough to get that line to six in the mix nicely. May need to re-mix on a different system to get it to sit just right.

Cheers again though, appreciate you taking the time for a listen and feedback.

Nice tune. I liked everything about it. THe vocals sounded good set back but I thought they may have been a little low at times. What effect do you have on your voice?

Great work

nice tune.

I quite liked the sound of the vocal. Also a well balanced mix.

Basically, I can't find anything to pick at.

keep it up

Cheers Ray and Cyan,

appreciate you checking out my tune. Re: Vocal effects. I use Waves and the stock Cool Edit Pro plugins. Basically I take a stereo clean vocal track and add a "spreader" (Waves). I take a second copy of the clean track, this time in mono, run it through a filter which is supposed to make it sound like it's on a telephone and pan it hard left or right but way down in the mix. In some sections there is also the clean untreated vocal panned left.

That's about all my secrets revealed :)

Thanks again

Simes,

Nice tune... very moody cool vibe to it. Drums have a cool feel to them for being loops... well done.

I think the vocals could come out just a touch more... maybe set up some limiting on them and push them up in the mix...

Other than that it sounded like a killer tune..

Good work!
