I can't play even on single file at 96K! I get sound, but also a click click click click click click... very annoying. I just started using NT, wondering if anyone had experienced something similar. In Vegas audio, changing the sample rate to 48 gives stable results. Very stable, more so than 2000 or 98 so far.. (at 48K I can have 12-16 tracks and about 6 of the waves plugins... but no 96K! :( Any tweaks I should know about for NT 4?

hey man,

:(sorry you've been having so many problems with NT. I should have sent along a warning that said what a pain in the butt it is. I don't know abuot the 96k thing, but I'll look around.

H2H

I've been thinking about installing NT 4. It would be nice to hear some more pros and cons on this OS.

Twist

I'm just figuring it out twist, but so far I have to give it a (see icon above)

It's really my only option right now with my dual processor setup and my soundcard. So for me it's the best, even though I don't know what's going on. YET...

If I could figure out this 96K thing I'd be happy. I don't work a lot in 96K, but I'd like to know what going on, and if I can fix it.

don't sweat it Hard2Hear. You should have sent Bill Gates with it though. I'm sure he could figure all this out...

NT4 (NT standing for "New Technology) is / was an OS designed for business and professional markets, as opposed to Win95/98/Mill which were designed for home enviornments. It has been replaced by Windows 2000.

The development cycles for the NT family:

NT 3.5
NT 4
Win 2000
Win XP (later this year)

vs.

DOS
Win 3.1
Win 95
Win 98
Win Millenium
Win XP (later this year)

While the the Win 95 "family" has a core based on good 'ol DOS, for compatibility with old stuff, the NT "family" bypasses this. The result of these two seperate developments are:

NT is more stable, less prone to crashing.
NT being for "professionals" is less "user friendly"
NT has fewer software drivers for "consumer" products.

The NT family has traditionally had poorer support for "multimedia" because of Microsoft's perception that this is more of interest to home users (i.e. game players). But as you can see the systems are converging. The interface in Win 2000 and Win Millenium are almost identical, XP should finally bring the familys together (and drop the last remnant of DOS support).

If your hardware has drivers for NT, or Win 2000, and you are going to use the system exclusively for music, I would say that is the best choice.

In my case, as I am very familiar with Win 98, and I do occasionally use my DAW system for other things, I use that system. It works fine for me.

YMMV.

James HE, ROTFL, what do you want to bet Bill Gates couldn't figure out Win 2K any better than the rest of us.
