...just thought I'd pass along a what I thought was a good deal on a microphone isolator...yeah I know you can rig up something similar for cheap (I had a $35 PVC tubing and movers blanket rig before) but now that they have added a very nice quality heavy duty stand with the isolator (for free) I believe this is a great deal...I have also used the SE version at a friend's studio, but I prefer the flexibility of this unit's adjustable side panels to the more rigid (heavy and cumbersome) SE Reflexion Filter...

...some vendors like Musicians Friend are now asking $249 with the free stand but I got mine at B&H Photo for the original price of $219 shipped with the free stand (Zzounds is also honoring the old price)...the added stand is no cheapo lightweight boom stand of the $20 variety...it's a much more heavy duty stand designed to accommodate the "Mic Thing" and it extends much taller than the typical inexpensive stand...

...if interested, check it out:

...and it does work rather well if you're recording in an untreated room as I am...the singers that have been in my home studio were impressed and I believe it gave them a bit more confidence to "step up & deliver" than my old PVC/blanket rig did...your results may differ, of course, IMHO...;)

I've been looking at these, good to hear some real world feedback.

What's the cosntruction, is it just mounted foam or is there anything a bit more substantial?

Kevin...it's a rather thick pleated section of acoustic foam mounted in a very sturdy and attractive metal housing with two adjustable side panels...also included, which they don't list or show pictures of, are 2 rectangular L-shaped metal diffusion screens (similar to a metal mesh pop filter) that fit over and cover each of the 2 adjustable side panels to acheive a different form of sound diffusion/isolation...

...I'm preparing to go to my sunday night gig, but when I have some time, I will post some pictures of my actual rig with 2 mics mounted...I have to say, I was "on the fence" about ordering this "Mic Thing" before, but the inclusion of the free heavy-duty stand was the clincher for me...the entire setup is very concise, functional and professional, and much more flexible than my home-made rig...I'm very pleased with it and I have to say the cost of the stand (easily a $50 or more unit) plus the free UPS for the stand (both items ship in seperate boxing) adds substantial value to the overall $219 shipped cost...;)

Cool, thanks.

We tend to pay a little more over here for most things (I’m in the UK). The best price I can find in Europe is at Thomman- £176 with the stand ($360US).
