Hey guys! I've been mainly recording Rap, but I was just wondering what you guys think my next step is. My recordings are on myspace.com/osxrecording (listen to the two at the top) if you want to hear what I've done. Basically, I record with an AT2020 into a Firepod into Logic 8 with Izotope Mastering Plugs.
Do you guys think I should upgrade to a preamp, and not upgrade the mic? Or upgrade the mic? Or stay where I am at?
Are you unhappy with your vocal sound? What are you looking to improve. If you like the sound your getting, then no need to change the equipment.
Either way, I'd say making sure you have a good recording enviroment before upgrading the mic or preamp. If you don't already have a vocal booth, it would probably be wise to make or buy something like this: http://www.realtraps.com/p_pvb.htm. That way when you do upgrade the mic or pre, you'll be able to get the most out of your new equipment.
Oh, and in that setup, i'd upgrade the Mic before the pre.
In that case, I'd say acoustic treatment, then a new mic
and if you want to keep upgrading (because it's nigh impossible not to want to upgrade), then consider a nice pre-amp and then a high-quality outboard compressor.
