Please eloborate. What was the right mic for you? What was the right preamp?
I repeat the question. And I think you should also eloborate on how you double/widened your vocal.

There's a lot of people who post here who have a voice similar to yours and they (me) can learn something from you if you're willing to share.

I've got a 5-8k "curiousity" in my vocal. It's not picked up so quickly if listening to me in open air ... but those with sensitive ears get how it gets picked up electronically. It's there -- and gets accented by most mics that accentuate said upper freq range ... because normally, that range represents "presence" in a vocal, and accordingly, mics are designed accordingly. The problem is that's a problem for me because my timbre naturally accentuates that range. I need taming in that region.

Tube mics have a natural smoothing of upper frequency harmonics ... so Jim over at RP advised me to get a Karma 58 tube mic and swap it out w/ the GE 5 Star tube.

I got it in, and was unimpressed ... because I'm a cheap fucking Yankee and can't follow directions exactly against my cheap. At that time, I was also running tube into Peavy VMP-2 (also Jim's suggestion), a tube pre -- and it really didn't sound right. It sounded nasty.

I knew I needed to find a different pre -- tube into tube = suck ... and I fell into a Trident Celebration at Git Ctr in Manchester (you know where that is :) ). It was a 1200 or so piece I got at clearance for a couple hundred bucks. Right place at right time.

It still sucked. Jim pressed me to replace the tube ... so I did at a cost of all of 25 whole extra dollars. My cheap was found to be my problem. The skies opened and angels sang ... and they didn't have a problem between 5-8k.

But as good as the combination has been, I've also discovered other tools that help ... and even if I told the tell all story, it wouldn't work for most ... because it's my story, not theirs. It's not like shoes. Size 8k doesn't fit all size 8s.

Whoops ... sorry. I didn't answer that question. Are you talking about the harmony or the vocal itself? The vocal wasn't widened. It's got a reverb, delay, and tube warmer on it.

Yes. I know where Guitar Center in Manchester is. I hate that store! lol!!!!

If you want to keep your story to yourself that's fine and well as far as I'm concerned. I understand that one shoe doesn't fit everyone. I just thought it might be incumbent upon you to tell the complete story concerning what it was that made your vocal improve dramatically. And share that info,

You post here and at RP. You receive more feedback here than you do at RP.

If you want to keep it a secret what worked for you.....fine.

Oops! We cross posted, Kdub.

I was interested in what made ALL of your vocals work. And you still haven't answered one of my questions. What mic are you now using?

This isn't the time or place for secrets!;)

In a world of making nothing but loss of time and money off of effort, what point is secret? I outlined my mic and pre above. I don't know what exact settings for my voice might matter to others ... but I'm quite happy that anyone thinks what I did might hold some sort of secret. :)
