Newest One: "May Angels Guide" (New name)

Taking and utilizing the advice of all who commented ... on this and other boards; this is done.

Thanks to all who commented. The listen count resets to zero on the new file.

I ultimately employed a synth harmonizer for the chorus -- and Sweet Ann the vocaloid again -- and kicked up the percussion ... bunch of other stuff.

Best,

Kev-

Lead in doesn't bother me: I use it all the time though I do, usually, slice it off to make the download/stream smaller as a matter of courtesy to the listener/reviewer.
It's very 80's AOR but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Nice capture, the Rhodes keyboard is cool.
Sometimes the extreme panning of the cymbals seemed odd.
The chorus isn't as strong as the verse.
Some nice work, well done.

Lead in allows grid alignment for those who noodle, and might contribute later if they wish -- although I screwed up and originally listed it at 100 bpm when it's at 110 (fixed this morning). Pan of cymbals was intended ... as cymbals, notice where they happened against the guitar in pan sense ... so there was less frequency interruption in the space to allow for other sounds that occurred across other places.

I also recessed the vocal in this mix ... much more than my normal approach. Does it work better?

You suggested the chorus wasn't as strong as the verse. I agree that an "uplift" is needed. What would you do there to step it up?

Thank you. It's hard to pull everything heard in head w/o all the tools at hand -- so this is the best I could do with what I had at my disposal.

I apologize about all the sexual references. Okay ... there are no sexual references ... but I might have made you look. :)

Sounded good overall. Lead vocal was especially clear. BGV had a bit of the hollow tube effect.

Low end might be a little strong for the genre.

Not a big fan of all the reverb. I just don't like that much of it. But with this type of song it fits I suppose.

Some weird tom hit on the right side at about 1:00. Comes out of nowhere and it's loud.

I'm hearing oooh's at 1:01 when the "Little child may the sun shine...." Either that or a high harmony part (which comes in a couple of lines later).

Oohs -- I LIKE that idea. The minute you said it, I heard it. I didn't like the direct harmonies beginning right out of the gate ... (which are a vocal synth that follows the lead vocal where the notes sung are directed by midi -- hence the "hollow" tone), so I chose to introduced them later on. But oohs might be the right addition there.

I turned up the bass guitar because Stainless told me to. :)

Reverb comes w/ the style -- and I made it even worse by putting a doppler swirl on the reverb alone ... so that not only do I get a whispered female vocal, the reverberant fog is swirling all over the soundstage like white smoke.

Thanks for the thoughts, Trip!

I think it sounds real good. Maybe your best mix to date. This vocal level is where I think they always should be. In the past I've always felt you mix the vocals a little too on top, but this is just right.

I totally agree with Greg_L. This is by far your best mix yet. The vocal sits where it needs to sit and for some reason (can't put my finger on why) but your vocal on this tune has less of an edge to it than it usually does. The vocal on this tune is silky smooth.

Great song.....

Thanks, bud ... I consider that high praise.

I finally got the right mic and the right pre w/ the right processing -- and thanks for the listen! :)

yup...this is a very nice mix, while I like your take on things anyway this track seems more complete, fluid...the backing vocals really work exceptionally well

great work K

forgot...I agree with whats been said on the vocals, they do sound much smoother

the gtrs or whatever they are, sound incredible. What is it? To me, this song is a couple steps up musically from most of your stuff. I love it. No suggestions, but maybe a less linear mix/production might make some impact somehow. There's some real ear candy in there... especially the "wind" at the end. Watch that sloppy fade out though.

Eh ... I got done with most of the important stuff and let the afterbirth flow. :)

Yes ... they are guitars ... and I tried 245 various versions of synth before settling on guitar as exact tone sought.

Do you hear lessons from our "Look" experiment in here? They're there. This was the next project right after. I copied some of the mix elements from your version.

Please eloborate. What was the right mic for you? What was the right preamp?

btw ... I've held back on some of my strongest material as I recognized I couldn't do it justice unless I learned how to do it justice best. I published the straightforward first ... because it was, in context, the easiest stuff to do first -- and I made so many mistakes along the way cutting my teeth learning.

Part of that dynamic is evidenced in, "Gee, your voice sounds different." ... and that's right. It does. It took years for me working alone to figure out the right combination of dialing up all sorts of options to figure out how to make my fucking voice sound "natural".

My cousin is the guy who is behind Fountain of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom has got it going on" ... and his comment to me about certain things in production is "If it takes all night, we're going to make this sound natural and spontaneous."
